No. 9 Buckeyes Open B1G Tournament Series with 5-1 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a four-point game from freshman Stephen Halliday and 33 saves from Jakub Dobes, the No. 9-ranked Ohio State men's hockey team defeated No. 10 Penn State, 5-1, in game one of a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal best-of-three series.
Ohio State, the No. 3 seed, improves to 19-13-3 on the year, and the No. 6 seed Nittany Lions are now 20-14-1. The squads will meet in game two at 5 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena in Columbus. The game will be streamed through Big Ten Plus and on Ohio State Radio. Game three, if necessary, will be at 5 p.m. Sunday in VCA.
The Short Story
Ohio State scored the only goal of the first period less than five minutes into the game, with Davis Burnside notching his team-best 14th goal of the season. The Buckeyes took control in the second, with two goals in a 44-second span with the teams skating 4-on-4 and a power play goal. Tyler Duke, Cam Thiesing and Cole McWard all tallied in the second. Penn State broke up the shutout with a power play goal at 11:00 of the third. Halliday, who had an assist on three of the first four Buckeye goals, lit the lamp himself at 12:02 for a 5-1 lead. Ohio State had the edge in shots, 39-34, and Buckeye goalie Jakub Dobes made 33 stops for his 19th win of the year. Each team had one power play goal – the Buckeyes were 1-for-5, with Penn State 1-for-3.
How it Happened
- Stephen Halliday slid a pass through a Nittany Lion defender to Davis Burnside in front and he put a one-timer past the PSU goalie for a 1-0 lead at 4:31.
- Shots were 14-11 in favor of Penn State in the opening 20 minutes and PSU had the only power play chance.
- With the teams skating 4×4, the Buckeyes scored twice. Tyler Duke's shot from the right faceoff circle went far post at 4:34, set up by Tate Singleton and Halliday. Just 44 seconds later, Cam Thiesing took a pass from Mason Lohrei and sent a blast from the left circle.
- At 13:58 Cole McWard converted a Jake Wise shot on the power play for a 4-0 Ohio State advantage. Halliday again assisted on the goal.
- Ohio State, which had three power play chances in the stanza, doubled Penn State in shots in the second, 14-7.
- Penn State's power play goal at 11:00 of the third broke up the shutout.
- Just over a minute later Halliday picked off a Nittany Lion pass just outside the blueline. He drove the net and put a shot in backhand for a 5-1 game at 12:02.
- The teams combined for 27 shots in the third, with Ohio State ahead, 14-13. The Buckeyes had two power play chances, Penn State one.
- For the game, Ohio State led in shots, 39-34. Jakub Dobes played all 60 minutes and had 33 saves for the Buckeyes.
- Ohio State blocked 16 shots – Halliday had a team-best four, with Scooter Brickey second with three.
- The Buckeyes power play ended the game 1-for-5 and the penalty kill was 2-for-3.

- Halliday leads Ohio State with 29 assists and 38 points. It was his first career four-point night after five three-point outings. He now has five three-assist games for the Scarlet and Gray.
- Burnside is first with 14 goals, with Thiesing second with 12.
- Wise hit the 30-point mark with his assist and now has an 11-19-30 line.
- Lohrei is second on the squad with 24 assists and third with 27 points.
- The Buckeyes are 32-for-145 (.221) on the power play this season.
- On the penalty kill, Ohio State is 128-for-144 (.889), among the NCAA leaders.
- The Nittany Lions (first/40.0) and Buckeyes (second/36.0) are the Top 2 teams in the country in shots on goal per game.
