Ohio State Beats No. 29 Indiana at Big Ten Championships

 - Ohio State's men's and women's cross country teams opened up the postseason portion of their schedule with the Big Ten Championships on Sunday at the Indiana Championship Cross Country Course. The women placed sixth with a team score of 149 points and edged No. 29 Indiana (156 points).  

Women's Recap
Running at the course for the second time this season, the Buckeyes covered the difficult and hilly course with some swift times. Christine Frederick paced the Buckeyes and earned an 11th-place showing with a 6k time of 20:39.2 to earn Second Team All-Big Ten honors.

Running with Frederick for most of the 6k race was Emily Stoodley. Stoodley, who placed 15th at the 2016 Big Ten Championships, covered the course in 21:00.1 to place 24th today marking the second Buckeye to cross the finish line.

Sarah Kanney (21:23.1) and Abby Nichols (21:23.9) ran with each other throughout the race and finished side-by-side in the finishing chute to earn 35th and 36th-place showing respectively.


 

 

Sophomore Lainey Studebaker was the final Buckeye to score with a 43rd-place finish; she clocked a time of 21:30.6. Just off Studebaker's pace was Lilly Saniel-Banrey who dashed to the finish line with a time of 21:32.8 to finish in 44th place.

Kalee Soehnlen (21:38.9/50th place), Brittany Atkinson (21:47.1/57th place) and Caroline Millican (21:58.9/60th place) were the final three finishers for the women. 

Big Ten Sportsmanship Honorees
Aaron Wood and Christine Frederick were named Big Ten Sportsmanship honorees. Wood and Frederick are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students are in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Men's Recap
The men's team finished in 11th place with a team score of 332 points. Jake Mandel, a senior, was Ohio State's top finisher with an 8k clocking of 25:25.0, and Aaron Wood followed his footsteps with a 65th-place showing with a readout of 25:26.9.

Rounding out the scoring effort for the Buckeyes were Mitch Leitch, Kevin Blank and Alex Lomong. Leitch, a senior, crossed the finish line at 25:34.6 earning him a 71st-place showing. Blank, also a senior, finished in 25:50.8 to earn the 77th slot. Lomong was just off Blank's place and finished with a time of 25:54.9 for 79th place.

Paul Bete, who was competing at his first Big Ten Championships, finished 95th with a time of 26:29.4. Patrick Kunkel placed 98th with a readout of 26:55.5.
