Ohio State Finishes Sixth at Notre Dame
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s cross country team raced to a sixth-place team finish at the 5k Notre Dame Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., Friday afternoon. The Buckeyes were led by senior All-American Katie Borchers, who placed fourth overall.
Ohio State closed the meet with a team score of 184, finishing three points shy of fifth place and 30th-ranked Penn State. No. 12 New Mexico placed five runners in the Top 20 to capture the team title with a score of 49. A total of 20 teams and 165 athletes competed.
“Today was our first opportunity this season to experience a quality field in a big race setting,” distance coach Sara Vergote said after the race. “Our upperclassmen showed we have come a long way from last year in terms of managing the pressure that comes with this type of race.”
Borchers, a native of Russia, Ohio, crossed the finish line in a personal-best 5k time of 16:19.40 (5:16 mile pace), 16 seconds faster than her previous record set three weeks ago at the Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational. Three of the Top-4 finishers were 2013 All-Americans, including individual champion Charlotte Arter of New Mexico (16:09.3).
Ohio State’s four additional scorers finished the race in a tight pack within the Top 50, and all recorded personal-best times. Junior Sakiko Minagawa was 42nd overall in 17:02.6 (5:30 mile pace), followed by sophomore Tammy Berger (44th, 17:04.5/5:30), senior Michelle Thomas (46th, 17:05.3/5:30) and senior Nicole Hilton (17:06.2/5:31).
“Katie had a great race and our 2-5 runners did an excellent job working and staying together,” Vergote said. “We have some things we need to continue to improve on but I'm pleased with our performance today.”
