COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ashley Wenz earned a spot on the All-Northeast Region squad on Tuesday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced. She was joined by teammate Luisa Schirmer, an All-Northeast Region honorable mention. It is the first career regional laurels for the senior duo. Both Buckeyes are now eligible for the AVCA All-America Teams.
Wenz, an All-Big Ten honorable mention, had the best showing of her career during her senior campaign. She started 29 of 31 matches for Ohio State in 2017. She stood second on the team with 333 kills and tallied double-digit kills in 18 contests. Wenz also registered 137 digs, 81 blocks (8s, 73a) and 15 service aces.
Schirmer shined during her final season in Scarlet & Gray as she led the Buckeyes with 352 kills and 21 service aces. She joined the 1,000 kill/1,000 dig club in 2017 and recorded nine double-doubles. Schirmer played in all 31 matches, making 29 starts, on her way to 247 digs, 28 blocks (8s, 20a) and 27 assists. The outside hitter also ranked ninth in kills per set (3.56) in Big Ten-only matches.
The pair helped guide the Buckeyes to three straight NCAA Sweet 16s from 2014-2016. They had a hand in 85 Ohio State victories over the past four seasons, including 42 Big Ten wins.
