COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ben Spurlock, a former Buckeye student-athlete and Ohio native, returns to Columbus as an assistant coach for the Ohio State women's volleyball program, announced by head coach Geoff Carlston. Spurlock has been coaching at the collegiate level for eight years after concluding his playing career in 2009.
"We are excited to bring this Buckeye back home to be with our program," Carlston said. "Ben brings a great mix of enthusiasm and knowledge to our staff as well as appreciation for all our university has to offer."
Spurlock spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach for Saint Louis University. He led the Billiken recruiting efforts, signing two state's Gatorade Player of the Year nominees and the 2013 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. Spurlock was also responsible for on-court training of defenders and blockers, opponent scouting and directing the programs day-to-day operations. During the 2016 campaign, he guided SLU to an 18-win season with a conference record of 11-3, concluding with a second straight trip to the A-10 Tourney Finals.
Prior to Saint Louis, Spurlock was an assistant coach at Northwood University in Midland, Mich., for two years. He developed the team's practice and match plans while serving as the recruiting coordinator and supervisor for the program's academic progress.
From 2005-2009, Spurlock competed as a Buckeye. He helped the men's volleyball squad to three Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) regular season titles, as well as, three MIVA Tournament championships and NCAA Semifinal appearances in 2005, 2008 and 2009. He was named to the All-MIVA Second Team as a junior and continues to hold the eighth best match hitting percentage in program history by attacking .900 in contests against Rutgers-Newark in 2009 and Carthage in 2006. Spurlock racked up 397 kills, earning a .438 career hitting percentage during his 69 matches donning the Scarlet & Gray.
The Stow, Ohio, native graduated from Ohio State in 2009 with a degree in human ecology.
