COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State women's volleyball head coach Geoff Carlston announced the hiring of Laura Benzing as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes. Benzing comes from Oregon State where she spent five seasons as an assistant coach.

"We are so excited to have Laura joining our staff," Carlston said. "Her energy and experience at every level of the game will be a big asset to our program."

At Oregon State, one of Benzing's primary responsibilities was to coordinate the program's recruiting. In this role, she helped produce a nationally-recognized 2009 recruiting class and brought in the program's first Fab 50 recruit. Benzing also served as the liaison between the student-athletes and academics and has helped the team earn three-straight AVCA Team Academic Award honors.

On the court, Benzing focused on both team and individual blocking. Both the 2010 and 2011 teams finished second in the Pac-10 in blocks per set. She also worked on defense and trained middle hitters.

"It is a tremendous honor to join the athletic tradition of Ohio State," Benzing said. "I look forward to the opportunity to work for an excellent coach in Geoff, who is a great coaching role model for me with his balance of abilities to recruit, coach and create a positive environment for student-athletes. The team is an amazing group of young women and I thrilled to be part of this family!"

Prior to Oregon State, Benzing played professionally in the German Bundesliga for four years before retiring and accepting a position with the Beavers in 2006.

Benzing graduated magna cum laude from Bradley in 2002 with a Bachelor's of Science in pre-law. She earned two first team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors at middle blocker with the Braves.

A native of Sparta, Wis., Benzing recently finished a six-month stint with Club West Volleyball in Temecula, Calif., directing coaches and coaching U14 and U16 groups. She is fluent in German and also earned a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults from the University of Cambridge while overseas. She also obtained her USA Weightlifting Level I Sports Performance Certification in January 2011.
