Buckeyes Sweep Wildcats, 3-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's volleyball team captured a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-18) win over Northwestern Saturday night in St. John Arena. The win pushed the Buckeyes to 17-13 on the season and 5-13 in Big Ten play.
Senior Kaitlyn Leary picked up her 14th double-double of the year, totaling 23 kills and 12 digs in the win. Sophomore Katie Mitchell tied a career-best with 10 kills and chipped a career-best three blocks, while freshman Taylor Sandbothe had nine kills and a match-high seven blocks. Senior Julianne Mandolfo finished with a match-best 16 digs and freshman Valeria León added 12.
Kayla Morin led the Wildcats (16-14, 8-10) with 13 kills, while Stephanie Holthus had 12. Setter Caleigh Ryan finished with 32 assists and libero Caroline Niedospial had 15 digs.
The Buckeyes opened the set with a 4-1 lead and pushed ahead for an 8-3 advantage on kills from Sandbothe and Andrea Kacsits. A Sandbothe/Leary block forced a Wildcat timeout at 16-11 and back-to-back kills from Leary gave the Buckeyes a 20-13 lead. A pair of kills from Erin Sekinger and one from Mitchell pushed Ohio State to set point and the squad captured the set, 25-16.
Three-straight kills by Leary led to a quick 7-2 Buckeye lead to start the second. Ohio State pushed ahead for a 10-4 advantage before Northwestern began to chip away and come within two at 11-9. The Buckeyes utilized Wildcat errors late in the set to take a 21-16 lead, but the visitors used a pair of runs to stall Ohio State set point and tie it up at 24 apiece. A kill from Sandbothe gave the Buckeyes set point once again and a Wildcat error gave the Scarlet and Gray a 26-24 win.
Northwestern came out of intermission and took a 6-2 lead to open set three. Straight kills from Leary cut the Wildcat lead to two at 9-7 and the Buckeyes used a four-point run to take a 11-10 advantage. A kill by Leary triggered a 6-0 Buckeye rally for a 19-14 lead and Ohio State sealed the match with a 25-18 victory.
The Buckeyes close out the season with a pair of Big Ten matches, opening with a Wednesday night match against No. 2 Penn State Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. ET. Ohio State caps the 2013 regular season with a match at Iowa, Nov. 30.
