COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 14 Ohio State women's volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 20-25) loss to Michigan Friday night in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes honored its four seniors prior to the match - Mariah Booth, Emily Danks, Mari Hole and Amanda Peterson.
Hole led the Buckeyes (22-10, 13-7 Big Ten) with 15 kills with 11 digs for her 17th double-double of the season. Junior Kaitlyn Leary followed with 14 kills and a career-high eight digs. Sophomore Anna Faul notched a career-high eight kills for Ohio State and led all student-athletes with six blocks.
Junior Davionna DiSalvatore had a team-high 15 digs, while Danks had nine kills with four blocks. Booth added eight kills and setters Taylor Sherwin and Peterson finished with 27 and 20 assists, respectively.
Lexi Erwin led all attackers with 22 kills, while libero Tiffany Morales had a match-best 21 digs for the Wolverines (23-11, 11-9 Big Ten). Molly Toon finished with 14 kills and Jennifer Cross had 13. Setter Lexi Dannemiller notched 49 assists with 10 digs.
The Wolverines took a 3-0 lead to start the first and pushed ahead for a 6-2 advantage. A kill by Booth triggered a 4-1 Buckeye run to cut the Michigan lead to one at 8-7. A kill and service ace by Danks set the score 13-12 in favor of the Wolverines, but the visitors battled ahead for a 17-14 lead. Michigan held its slim lead throughout the rest of the set and took it, 25-22.
Down 6-3, a Peterson block and a Leary kill led to a 6-6 tie in the second set. Ohio State put together an 8-1 run to take a 15-9 advantage highlighted by three-straight Danks/Faul blocks. Kills by Hole and Faul elevated the Buckeye lead to eight a 19-11, but the Wolverines responded with a run of their own and cut the Ohio State lead to two at 22-20. A kill by Hole gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-22 and the squad went on to a 25-23 win.
Michigan kicked off the third set with a 7-3 advantage and opened up to a 10-5 lead. A 6-1 Wolverine run set the score 16-8 and a two-point rally forced a Buckeye timeout at 19-10. A 4-1 Ohio State run highlighted by three kills from Booth cut the Michigan lead, but the Wolverines held on to take the set, 25-18.
After Michigan took a 5-2 advantage, a kill by Leary sent the Buckeyes on a 4-1 run for a 7-6 lead. The Wolverines rebounded on a 5-1 rally and took the lead back at 13-11. Another 5-1 Michigan run set the score 18-14 and the squad won the match with a 25-20 set victory.
Up next, Ohio State will participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championships. The selection show is set for Sunday at 4 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
