Buckeyes Drop 3-1 Match at No. 14 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - The Ohio State women's volleyball dropped a 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 21-25) match at No. 14 Wisconsin Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes moved to 16-12 overall and 4-12 in Big Ten play.
Senior Kaitlyn Leary picked up her 12th double-double of the season, totaling a match-best 17 kills and adding 12 digs. Freshman Taylor Sandbothe finished with 13 kills and three blocks (1s, 2a), while sophomore Andrea Kacsits had seven kills and six block assists. Senior libero Julianne Mandolfo totaled 18 digs for the Buckeyes.
Four Badgers (20-8, 9-7) finished with double-digit kills in the match. Courtney Thomas and Dominique Thompson totaled 13 kills, while Ellen Chapman had 12 and Deme Morales had 11. Thomas chipped in 13 digs and Morales had 12. Setter Lauren Carlini led the match with 50 assists and added 13 digs. Libero Annemarie Hickey had a team-best 15 digs.
The Badgers opened the first set on a 4-0 run and pushed ahead for an 11-4 lead to force a Buckeye timeout. Ohio State responded with a 4-1 rally to come within four at 12-8 before Wisconsin pressed forward for a 17-10 advantage. The Buckeyes quickly regrouped and a pair of Leary kills sent the squad on a 9-1 run to grab a 19-18 lead. The teams exchanged points before a pair of Badger attack errors gave the Buckeyes a 25-23 set win.
A kill from Sandbothe set the score 4-3 in favor of the Buckeyes to start the second, but the Badgers responded with a four-point run for a 7-4 lead. Wisconsin extended its lead at 10-5 and then grabbed its largest lead of the set at 20-9. An Erin Sekinger kill sent Ohio State on a 5-1 run to cut the Badger lead at 21-14 and three-straight kills from Leary stalled three Wisconsin set points, but the Badgers were able to side out and win the set, 25-18.
The teams went back and forth in the third set, opening with seven ties and an 8-8 score. A kill from Leary led to an 11-10 Buckeye advantage before Wisconsin used a 5-1 run to take a 17-14 lead. Three-straight Badger kills lifted the home squad to a 21-17 lead and Wisconsin captured the set, 25-21.
A kill by Sandbothe and a Leary service ace put the Buckeyes up 6-2 to start the fourth set. Back-to-back Buckeye blocks forced an early Wisconsin timeout with Ohio State leading 9-5. The Badgers responded with a three-point run to tie the set at 11, but a kill from Leary sent Ohio State on a 3-1 run for a 15-12 advantage. Wisconsin wasn't ready to back down and captured its first lead of the set at 16-15 and moved ahead at 20-19. Another run gave the Badgers a 24-20 led and the team sealed the match with a 25-21.
The Buckeyes return to St. John Arena for a pair of matches at home. Ohio State will face nationally-ranked Illinois Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. ET. The match will serve as the team's senior night, honoring the squad's three seniors. The day and time for Ohio State's match vs. Northwestern has yet to be determined because of a 3:30 p.m. start time for the Ohio State football team Saturday.
