Buckeyes Bounce No. 14 Boilermakers, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's volleyball captured a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22) win over No. 14 Purdue Saturday night in St. John Arena. Four Buckeyes finished with double-digit kills in the win that lifted the squad to 16-10 overall and 4-10 in Big Ten play.
Senior Kaitlyn Leary totaled a match-high 18 kills in the win, while the freshmen duo of Taylor Sandbothe and Kylie Randall chipped in 12. Sophomore Katie Mitchell notched a career-best 10 kills and junior setter Taylor Sherwin finished with a match-best 48 assists.
Val Nichol had 16 kills for Purdue (16-9, 7-7) and added 23 assists. Catherine Rebarchak finished with 11 kills, while KiKi Jones had six kills and six blocks (2s, 4a). Libero Hilliary Fox totaled 15 digs for the Boilermakers.
After the Buckeyes took an early 4-1 advantage to start set one, Purdue broke out on a 9-2 run for a 10-6 lead. A kill from Andrea Kacsits and one from Leary brought the Buckeyes within three at 16-13 and another kill from Leary set the score 19-18 in favor of Purdue. The Boilermakers, however, closed out the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-20.
Kills from Mitchell and Leary led to a 4-1 Buckeye lead in the second set and more kills from Mitchell and Leary pushed the Scarlet and Gray to an 8-4 advantage. The Boilermakers bounced back and used a 4-0 run to take a late 16-14 lead, but a kill from Leary locked the set at 16 apiece. A kill from Kacsits and a solo Sandbothe block gave the Buckeyes a 21-19 advantage and a kill from Leary sealed a 25-23 win.
A 5-1 Buckeye run kicked off the third and pushed Ohio State to a 5-2 lead. Purdue tied it up at seven before a pair of kills from Leary and one by Sherwin set the score 10-7. The Boilermakers utilized a three-point run for their first lead of the set at 15-13, but the Buckeyes continued to battle and grabbed a 17-16 lead on a Sandbothe/Sherwin block. The teams went back and forth until, tied at 23, a pair of Purdue attack errors gave Ohio State a 25-23 victory.
Boilermaker errors lifted the Buckeyes to an early 5-1 advantage to open the fourth. A Mandolfo ace set the score 10-6 before Purdue responded with a 3-0 run to cut the Buckeye lead, 10-9. The Boilermakers used late momentum to jump ahead 16-14, but a kill from Sandbothe and a Sandbothe/Randall block sent the Buckeyes on a 4-1 run for a 17-16 lead. A pair of Purdue errors gave Ohio State match point at 24-21 and a Sandbothe/Sherwin block wrapped a 25-22 win.
The Buckeyes take to the road for a pair of matches at nationally-ranked conference foes Minnesota and Wisconsin. Ohio State will face the Golden Gophers Friday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. ET in Minneapolis. The Buckeyes close out the weekend with a 2 p.m. ET tilt against the Badgers, Nov. 17.
