COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 20 Ohio State women's volleyball team captured a three-set sweep (25-17, 26-24, 25-12) of Iowa on the road Saturday night. With the win, the Buckeyes improved to 17-7 overall and 8-4 in the Big Ten.
Senior Mari Hole and junior Kaitlyn Leary finished with 14 kills each to lead the squad. Leary totaled a .500 attack percentage with 14 kills on 26 attempts with only one error. Hole added eight digs and two solo blocks for the Buckeye defense.
Middle blocker Mariah Booth finished with 11 kills and a .625 attack percentage (11-1-16), while Emily Danks had seven kills and two service aces. Both Booth and Danks had three blocks (1s, 2a) on the night. Senior Amanda Peterson notched her second-straight double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs. Juniors Davionna DiSalvatore and Julianne Mandolfo had 16 and 11 digs, respectively.
Rachael Bedell had 13 kills to lead Iowa (10-15, 2-10 Big Ten). Setter Nikki Dailey finished with 21 assists and 12 digs, while libero Bethany Yeager had 10 digs for the Hawkeyes.
Kills by Danks, Andrea Kacsits and Leary led to a 3-0 lead to start the first for Ohio State. A pair of Booth kills and a Mandolfo service ace highlighted a six-point Buckeye run for a 12-3 advantage. A kill by Hole and another by Danks led to a 16-5 lead and two Ohio State two-point runs put Ohio State up, 23-13. A kill by Peterson solidified a 25-17 set win.
The Hawkeyes captured a 4-1 lead to open set two before a pair of kills by Leary and a DiSalvatore service ace locked the score at four apiece. Back-to-back service aces by Danks gave Ohio State a 7-5 lead, but Iowa came back to tie the set at eight. The two squads exchanged runs until a four-point Buckeye run set the score 17-13. Iowa inched its way back to tie the set at 20 and took set point at 24-23. A kill by Danks and one by Leary pushed Ohio State ahead at 25-24 and a Peterson kill sealed the win, 26-24.
With the score 4-4 in the final set, a kill by Leary triggered a 5-0 run for a 9-4 lead. Two four-point Buckeye runs set the score 15-6 and Ohio State pushed ahead for a 22-10 lead. A kill by Booth gave the Buckeyes match point at 24-12 and Peterson once again gave Ohio State the set with a kill, 25-12.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena for a pair of matches vs. Wisconsin and nationally-ranked Minnesota. The Buckeyes and Badgers battle Friday at 7 p.m. ET, while Ohio State takes on Minnesota Saturday at 7. Ticket information can be found at OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
