COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 20 Ohio State women's volleyball team upset No. 4 Nebraska in Lincoln at the NU Coliseum Friday with a 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 25-23) victory over the Huskers. The victory was the program's first win over Nebraska since 1991.
Four Buckeyes notched double-digit kills in the win for Ohio State (16-7, 7-4 Big Ten). Senior Mari Hole led all student-athletes with 20 kills and added eight digs with three blocks (1s, 2a). Classmates Emily Danks and Mariah Booth had 10 kills each, while junior Kaitlyn Leary notched 14 in the match. Senior setter Amanda Peterson picked up a double-double with 46 assists and 16 digs.
Defensively, junior libero Davionna DiSalvatore had a match-high 17 digs and Danks added 12. Danks, Booth and freshman Andrea Kacsits lead the Buckeye defense at the net. Kacsits had six blocks (1s, 5a), while Danks had five and Booth totaled four.
Morgan Broekhuis led Nebraska (17-3, 9-2 Big Ten) with 19 kills and 14 digs. Hannah Werth finished with 13 kills and 14 digs, while Gina Mancuso had 13 kills with 12 digs. Setter Lauren Cook totaled 50 assists and libero Lara Dykstra finished with 11 digs.
A kill by Kacsits sent the Buckeyes on a 4-0 run to open the first set to give Ohio State a 5-1 lead. The Huskers battled back for a 7-6 advantage before a six-point Buckeye run gave the visiting squad a 12-7 lead. Nebraska inched back within a point at 15-14 before a pair of Booth kills with a Husker error led to a 19-15 lead. A kill by Hole gave Ohio State set point at 24-21 and a Nebraska service error sealed the set win for the Buckeyes, 25-22.
Two kills by Hole and another by Kacsits set the score 3-1 in favor of Ohio State to open the second, but the Huskers battled back and took a 13-8 advantage. The Buckeyes didn't back down and a 6-1 run locked the set at 17 apiece. Nebraska pulled ahead for a four-point lead at 22-18 before a kill by Hole sent the Buckeyes on a run to tie the set at 22. The two squads exchanged points until a kill by Danks and a Husker error gave Ohio State a 26-24 win.
Nebraska took a quick 9-5 lead in set three to force a Buckeye timeout. The Huskers put together a pair of two-point runs for a 13-8 advantage and pushed ahead for a 20-14 lead. Kills by Hole and Booth and a solo block by Danks brought Ohio State within three at 20-17, but the Huskers held on to take the set, 25-18.
Down 3-0 in the fourth, a 7-1 rally gave the Buckeyes a 7-4 lead. Kills by Hole and Peterson set the score 12-9 and a pair of 2-0 rallies gave Ohio State an 18-14 advantage. Nebraska came back within a point at 22-21, but a kill by Peterson gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-22 and a kill by Leary ended the match with a 25-23 win.
Ohio State returns to the court Saturday to play Big Ten opponent Iowa in Iowa City. The Buckeyes and the Hawkeyes face off at 8 p.m. ET.
