COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 23rd-ranked Ohio State (15-8 overall, 5-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team overcame a two-point loss in the first set to Michigan State (16-6, 5-5) to win 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21) over the Spartans in front of 1,431 fans Saturday night. OSU’s Emily Danks posted a team-high 16.5 points with 13 kills (.225), two ace serves and three assist blocks. Kelli Barhorst added 14.5 points with 11 kills (.500), one solo block and five assist blocks. Michigan State’s Jenilee Rathje recorded a match-high 25 points with 23 kills (.207) and four assist blocks. Kyndra Abron added 13.5 points for the Spartans with 12 kills (.000) and three assist blocks.
In the first set, Ohio State trailed 8-5 when two kills from Danks and three Spartan errors gave the Buckeyes a 10-8 lead. At 12-10, two OSU errors tied the set at 12. A MSU error and an Amanda Peterson kill gave OSU a 14-12 lead. Two Spartan errors and kills from Kaitlyn Leary and Barhorst gave OSU a 17-13 lead. Michigan State trailed, 22-18, when an OSU error, a Gina Lang ace serve and a Rathje kill cut the lead to 22-21. A kill from Barhorst and an OSU error made it 23-22. An Alexis Mathews-Rathje block tied the set at 23. Michigan State, with two OSU errors, won the set, 25-23, for a 1-0 lead in the match. For the set, Michigan State hit .136 to .130 for OSU.
Michigan State opened set two with a 2-0 lead off an OSU error and an Abron kill. The Spartans expanded the lead to five at 10-5. A Mariah Booth kill and a MSU error made it 10-7. An Abron kill and a Spartan error made it 11-8. MSU, with a Jazmine White-Abron block made it 12-8. A Barhorst kill and an ace serve from Danks cut the lead to two at 14-12. An OSU error made it 15-12. The Buckeyes, with a Barhorst-Peterson block, a Spartan error and a second Barhorst-Peterson block tied the set at 15. Tied at 18, kills from Danks and Leary, a Spartan error and a Booth-Danks block gave Ohio State a 22-18 lead. Michigan State, with a Rathje kill and two White-Rathje blocks cut the lead to one at 22-21. Kills from Booth and White made it 23-22. A Rathje-White block tied the set at 23. Ohio State, with two Michigan State errors, won the set, 25-23, to tie the match at one set each. Ohio State hit .054 for the set to .022 for Michigan State.
After four early ties in the third set, the score was 8-8. The Buckeyes took a 10-8 lead with kills from Booth and Danks. An OSU error, a Booth-Danks block and a Mathews kill cut the lead to one at 11-10. A Leary kill and a White solo block made it 12-11. An ace serve and kill from Danks, a Peterson-Barhorst block and a MSU error opened a 16-11 Buckeye lead. Kills from Abron and Rathje made it 16-13. A Barhorst kill and two MSU errors opened a 19-13 OSU lead. Two kills from Rathje made it 19-15. Leading, 21-17, a Spartan error and a kill from Mari Hole made it 23-17. A Mathews kill and an OSU error cut the margin to 23-19. A kill from Booth gave OSU set point at 24-19. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Danks, won the set, 25-19, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. For the set, Ohio State hit .375 to .206 for Michigan State.
Michigan State opened the fourth set by scoring five straight points. At 10-5, a Kori Moster ace serve, a White-Natalie Emro block and an OSU error made the lead eight at 13-5. A Spartan error and an Erin Sekinger kill made it 13-7. Trailing, 15-9, kills from Booth and Leary, two kills from Barhorst and a Sarah Mignin ace serve cut the Spartan lead to one at 15-14. A Rathje kill and a MSU error made it 16-15. A Spartan error tied the set at 16 and a Barhorst kill gave OSU a 17-16 lead. A Barhorst-Peterson block and a Rathje kill made it 18-17. Kills from Barhorst and Rathje made it 19-18. The score moved to 20-19 with kills from Barhorst and Mathews. A Peterson kill made it 21-19 Buckeyes. Three Spartan errors gave Ohio State match point at 24-19. A Buckeye error stopped the match point at 24-20. A Rathje kill stopped a second match point at 24-21. Ohio State, with a kill from Danks, won the set, 25-21, to win the match, 3-1. The Buckeyes hit .216 for the set to .146 for the Spartans.
Ohio State hit .184 for the match to .121 for Michigan State. The Spartans had a 55-50 advantage in kills and a 49-46 edge in assists. OSU’s Peterson posted a match-high 27 assists with MSU’s Kristen Kelsay recording a team-high 24. Each squad recorded three ace serves with OSU’s Danks recording a match-high two. The Spartans gave up eight service errors to seven for OSU. Michigan State had a 70-66 advantage in digs. MSU’s Moster collected a match-high 28 digs with OSU’s Mignin recording 23 for the Buckeyes. At the net, the Spartans had a 10-9 margin in team blocks. MSU’s White collected a match-high eight blocks with a solo and seven assists. Barhorst posted a team-high six blocks for Ohio State with a solo and five assists.
The Buckeyes continue at home next week in St. John Arena by hosting No. 4 Nebraska at 7 p.m. Friday and Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday.
