BUFFALO, N.Y. - The No. 13 Ohio State women's volleyball team recorded its 10th win of the season Friday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, 25-9) win over Maryland Eastern Shore in the opening match of the Blue and White Classic in Buffalo, N.Y.
All 13 Buckeyes (10-0) scored at least a point in the win with freshman Taylor Sandbothe leading the way with nine kills and two block assists for 10 points. Junior Erin Sekinger added eight kills, while sophomore Andrea Kacsits finished with six kills and two block assists. Senior Kaitlyn Leary chipped in five kills and three blocks and setter Taylor Sherwin had a match-high 23 assists.
Senior Julianne Mandolfo totaled a match-best 13 digs, while Davionna DiSalvatore and Alyssa Winner finished with five apiece. Junior Anna Faul totaled three blocks for the Buckeye defenders that limited the UMES attackers to a -.171 attack percentage.
Ohio State kicked off the match on a 7-0 run and followed with a six-point run highlighted by a service ace from Valeria León for a 13-2 lead. A Kacsits kill set the score at 15-5 and a trio of Sekinger kills led to a 19-6 advantage. Freshman setter Maggie Heim, playing in the first match of her collegiate career, came in and served the rest of the way, leading Ohio State to a 25-6 win.
Another long opening run led to a 9-3 lead in the second set for the Buckeyes highlighted by a pair of kills by Sandbothe and Kacsits. The Ohio State blockers lifted the team to a 14-5 advantage and a Kacsits service ace pushed the squad up to 19-6. A kill from Kylie Randall sent the Buckeyes on a three-point rally for a 22-7 lead and Ohio State went into intermission with a 25-10 set two win.
The Buckeyes utilized early UMES (1-9) errors and jumped out to a 12-2 lead to open the third set. A service ace from Katie Mitchell led to a 16-3 advantage and kills from Mitchell and Kacsits closed out the match for a 25-9 victory.
Ohio State returns to the court Saturday morning for an 11 a.m. match vs. Valparaiso. The squad closes out the Blue and White Classic Saturday night, facing host Buffalo at 7 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
