COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 13 Ohio State women's volleyball team topped IUPUI, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22), in its first match of the 2013 Sports Imports DC Koehl Classic Friday in St. John Arena. Ohio State improved to 7-0 on the season, while Jaguars fell to 4-5.
Junior setter Taylor Sherwin collected her first double-double of the season, tallying 44 assists and 12 digs in the match. Senior Kaitlyn Leary led all student-athletes with 18 kills and added 12 digs for her third double-double on the year. Freshman outside hitter Kylie Randall notched 12 kills for the Buckeyes.
IUPUI sophomore Kaitlyn Hickey led all student-athletes with 23 digs in the match, while libero Beth Howard added 21. Moriah Fair led the Jaguars with 10 kills.
In the first set, the Jaguars and Buckeyes exchanged points to start the match until a Leary kill triggered a four-point run to tie the set at 13. Following an IUPUI timeout, the Buckeyes extended their lead to six, taking a 19-13 lead in the set. Back-to-back Ohio State blocks clinched the first set for the Scarlet and Gray, 25-16.
Back-to-back kills by IUPUI gave the Jaguars a 5-2 lead to start the second. The Buckeyes chipped away at the early IUPUI lead and went on a four-point run, knotting the score at 7-7. A Sherwin service ace and a Sandbothe solo block put the Buckeyes up 11-8. IUPUI battled back to come within a point a 14-13 and a Jaguar block forced a Buckeye timeout at 20 apiece. A kill by Leary gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-21 and the Parma, Ohio, product notched a kill for set point, 25-22.
Down a pair of points early, back-to-back kills from Leary locked the third at 5-5. The Jaguars utilized three two-point run to jump ahead at 12-9 and force a Buckeye timeout. A kill from junior Erin Sekinger triggered a 4-0 Ohio State run to push the home squad ahead at 14-13, but IUPUI chipped away again to take a two-point advantage at 19-17. Kills from Sekinger and Anna Faul tied it up at 20 apiece and another Sekinger kill sent the Buckeyes on a four-point rally to earn their first match point at 24-21. After an IUPUI sideout, Leary sealed the Ohio State victory with a kill, 25-22.
In the first match of the day, Xavier defeated Southeast Missouri, 3-1. Saturday kicks off with a 10 a.m. match between Xavier and IUPUI and is followed by a 12:30 p.m. match between the Buckeyes and SEMO. IUPUI and SEMO play at 4:30 and the tournament concludes with a 7 p.m. match between Ohio State and the Muskateers.
