Ohio State Takes WKU Tournament Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's volleyball team won its second-straight tournament title, capturing the WKU Tournament with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 25-23) victory over host Western Kentucky Saturday at the E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Ky.
Hole led the Buckeyes (8-1) with 13 kills and added 10 digs, while Leary finished with 10 kills. Senior Emily Danks totaled nine kills and classmate Mariah Booth had seven. Senior setter Amanda Peterson tallied her first double-double of the season, totaling 31 assists with a match-high 16 digs. She also tied a career-high with eight kills.
Junior libero Davionna DiSalvatore had 14 digs in the match, while freshman Jillian Bauer finished with six. Freshman middle blocker Andrea Kacsits guided the Buckeye blockers and had a hand on eight of the team's 16 total blocks, finishing with one solo block and seven assist blocks. Hole was second on the squad with four (1s, 3a).
WKU (8-3) was led by Jordyn Skinner, who had a match-high 15 kills and added seven digs. Heather Boyan totaled 10 kills and four block assists, while setter Melanie Stutsman led the match with 40 assists. Ashley Potts totaled 15 digs for the Hilltoppers.
Back-to-back kills by Danks and a service ace from Hole gave the Buckeyes a quick 3-2 lead to start the match, but WKU responded with a five-point run for a 7-3 advantage. Ohio State inched its way back into the set and a four-point rally highlighted by back-to-back blocks by Kacsits and Hole gave the Buckeyes a 13-11 lead. Another big Ohio State set the score 20-13 and the squad went on to take the set, 25-17.
The Hilltoppers took an early 6-4 lead in the second before a WKU attack error sent the Buckeyes on a 4-0 run to make the score 8-6 OSU. A solo block by Kacsits and a Hole/Kacsits block gave Ohio State a three-point advantage at 11-8 and another four-point rally put the visitors up 21-16. The Scarlet and Gray sent the match into intermission with a 25-18 set two win.
A handful of small runs gave WKU a 7-5 lead to open the third, but the Buckeyes responded and took the lead at 10-9 on a kill by Hole. Three two-point runs gave the Hilltoppers the lead again at 17-15 before Ohio State battled back to lock the score at 20 apiece. Western Kentucky hung in and closed out the set on a 5-1 run for a 25-21 win.
The Hilltoppers came out firing in set four, taking a 6-0 lead. WKU went up by as much as seven at 12-5, but a Leary kill triggered a three-point run to cut the WKU lead to four at 12-8. Down two at 19-17, another kill by Leary sent Ohio State on a major run to give the Buckeyes a 21-19 advantage. WKU locked the set at 22 and again at 23, but a kill by Peterson and a WKU attack error gave Ohio State the match win with a 25-23 score in set four.
Ohio State travels to Houston for its last regular season tournament, playing in the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup, Sept. 14-15. The Buckeyes open with a 4:30 p.m. match vs. No. 12 Pepperdine and follow with matches Saturday vs. No. 6 Florida State and host Houston.
