WVB: Ohio State Drops Season Opener at Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. - The Ohio State University women's volleyball team was topped in its season opener, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-16) to the host Oregon Ducks. Ohio State returns to the court twice on Saturday, completing the round-robin competition with a 2 p.m. ET match versus Illinois State and 8 p.m. ET contest against Central Arkansas.
Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Sandbothe was responsible for a team-high 13 points, putting away nine kills to go along with four blocks (2s, 2a) and an ace. Junior libero Valeria León cracked double digits in the digs column, picking up 11 balls on the night. Freshman outside hitter Luisa Schirmer earned the first start of her career, playing in all three sets.
After Oregon stormed out to a 6-0 advantage in the opening frame, the Buckeyes bounced back by seizing 11 of the next 17 points and pulling within a lone tally at 12-11. The score remained tight throughout before Oregon sealed the deal at 25-22.
It was another hot start for the Ducks in set number two, going on a 5-0 run to begin the stanza. A stellar defensive effort from Oregon closed the door on a Buckeye comeback in the second set as the Ducks dug 15 balls and put up four blocks en route to a 25-12 triumph.
Oregon's offense fueled the fire in the third set, attacking at a .464 clip (15-2-28) and clinching the match by a final score of 25-16.
