COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Katie Borchers broke her own school record in the 800m run Friday afternoon at the Ohio Open in Athens, Ohio, crossing the finish line in 2:06.84 to finish in first place.
Borchers – whose previous record of 2:06.95 was set in February at the Big Ten indoor meet – defeated unattached competitor and former Buckeye Shaniqua McGinnis by more than two seconds. The time ranks among the Top 50 in Division I this season.
In all, Ohio State won nine events in its final meet prior to the Big Ten championships. Here’s a complete recap:
Sophomore Alexandria Johnson and freshman Alexis Franklin placed 1-2. Johnson crossed the finish line in a season-best time of 13:58, while Franklin cleared the hurdles in 13.86.
A personal-best time of 23.55 helped junior Adenike Pedro to first place. Sophomore Aisha Cavin (23.58) and senior Ashlee Abraham (24.09) finished second and third, respectively, with season-best times.
Freshmen Bri Neitzel (56.49) and Khara Walker (season best 59.20) finished second and third, respectively. Ohio’s Danielle Winningham was first in 55.79.
Sophomore Janel Olberding placed third behind Borchers in a 2:09.41.
Runner-up honors went to freshman Tammy Berger in 4:36.48. Julie Accurso of Ohio was the winner in 4:33.99.
It was a race between six Buckeyes, with sophomore Michelle Thomas emerging victorious in a time of 10:09.42.
Senior Tori Brink was first in 10:45.19 and sophomore Nicole Hilton second in 10:59.27.
Freshman Sakiko Minagawa won the event in 18:04.78.
Sophomore Carly Pendleton turned in a season-best mark of 48.12m (157-10.50) to finish in first place.
Abraham, Cavin, Pedro and senior Christienne Linton combined for a first-place time of 46.10.
The Ohio State team of Olberding, Borchers, Neitzel and Berger won the race in 3:56.64.
