Franklin Wins 400-Meter Hurdles at Drake Relays

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Alexis Franklin turned in a season-best time of 57.81 seconds to win the 400-meter hurdles Friday afternoon at the 2014 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Franklin, a native of Millersville, Md., defeated runner-up Kayla Stueckle of Washington by .15 seconds with the 12th-fastest time in Division I this season. Her season-best time is .35 seconds shy of her personal best, set last season at the Big Ten championships.
In the 100-meter dash preliminaries, senior Ashlee Abraham won her heat in 11.62 seconds, posting the third-fastest time of the day. She will run in the finals tomorrow afternoon.
Abraham also ran with the Buckeyes’ 4x100-meter relay team Friday in preliminary action, helping the squad to a win in its heat and the third-fastest time of the day (44.93). Kansas posted the top time of the afternoon (44.63). The final is set for tomorrow afternoon at 3:15 p.m. CT.
Junior Katie Borchers placed ninth in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 2:06.99. Georgia’s Megan Malasarte won the race in a time of 2:03.61.
On Thursday night, junior Michelle Thomas used a personal-best time of 34:49.11 to place second in the 10,000-meter run, finishing just behind the winning pace by Mary Alex England of Ole Miss (34:48.66). The runner-up time by Thomas is the third best in school history. Sophomore Sakiko Minagawa placed ninth in the event with a personal-best time of 35:51.43.
Freshman Rachel Weber also had a PR Thursday, placing third in the unseeded 800-meter dash in a time of 2:10.80.
Competition resumes tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. CT.
