COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State’s women tennis team will conclude its fall season at the 2012 ASU Thunderbird this weekend in Tempe, Ariz. Seniors Fidan Manashirova, Gabby Steele and Kara Cecil will be joined by redshirt freshman Nicole Flower as Ohio State makes its fourth consecutive appearance at the Thunderbird.
The Buckeyes will be joined at the three-day event by fellow Big Ten opponent Michigan as well as California, Kansas State, University of San Diego, Brigham Young University and host Arizona State University in the 18th year of the tournament. Play runs Friday through Sunday at The Whiteman Tennis Center.

In 2011, the Scarlet and Gray completed the Thunderbird with six singles victories and four doubles wins. In their two prior appearances, the Buckeyes totaled 12 singles victories and five doubles wins in the 2009-10 seasons combined at the tournament.
COMPETING THIS WEEKEND
Senior Fidan Manashirova is coming off an undefeated run at the Lady Vols Classic where she secured victories in all singles matchups over the three days of the tournament. At the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional, she advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Matea Cutura of DePaul in a 6-2, 7-6 (2) decision.
Fellow senior Gabby Steele posted two singles victories in the Lady Vols Classic adding to her wins at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional and Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational to combine for four singles victories this season.
Senior Kara Cecil went 2-1 in singles and doubles matchups at the Brown Classic last weekend paired with Kelsey Dieters. After receiving a bye in the first round of singles qualifiers at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional, Cecil recorded one win before being eliminated in the third round by Emmie Marx of Illinois State, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Redshirt freshman Nicole Flower won three consecutive singles matches to qualify for a spot in the main draw of USTA/ITA Midwest Regional. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native also tallied one victory in main draw singles at the Lady Vols Classic and Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational.
Noelle Malley, Kelsey Becker, Kelsey Dieters and Cecil traveled to Providence, R.I., to compete in the Brown Classic Nov. 2-3, where the Buckeyes won 5-of-6 doubles matches and 9-of-12 singles matches in the tournament.
The tandem of Malley and Becker was 3-0 on the weekend, while Dieters and Cecil ended the tournament with a 2-1 doubles record. Dieters and Malley went undefeated in all singles match-ups in the two-day event featuring teams from Albany and Brown. Dieters has won five consecutive matches including two against Top 20 ranked opponents.
AFTER THE BREAK
The Buckeyes will return to the courts Jan. 19, 2013 in Morgantown, W.Va., to face West Virginia before beginning their spring home slate with matches against Toledo, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Nebraska and Kentucky in Columbus, Ohio.
