Niehaus, Kobelt Earn OVTA Honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Sandy Niehaus and redshirt senior Peter Kobelt, members of the Ohio State women and men’s tennis teams, respectively, are set to receive awards from the Ohio Valley Tennis Association (OVTA) Sunday. Kobelt earned the Carl Meyer Award as the Most Outstanding Player for the OVTA in 2013, while Niehaus will be honored with the Ruth Johnson Award for sportsmanship for her play on the Midwest Cup squad in the Marian Wood Baird Cup this summer.
Kobelt, a two-time ITA All-America honoree, began the 2013 season ranked No. 1 in the ITA singles poll after finishing as the runner-up in the 2012 ITA All-American Championships. In the 2013 fall season, the New Albany, Ohio, native captured his second consecutive Midwest Regional singles title and also partnered with Kevin Metka to claim the third Midwest Regional doubles title of his career.
Niehaus has notched wins in her seven of her eight singles matches in the fall campaign, including earning a berth in the singles main draw of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional in the qualifier draw. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has also captured wins in eight of her nine doubles matches, paired with freshman Gabriella De Santis and sophomore Grainne O’Neill.
