Buckeyes Find Success at Bloomington ITA Summer Circuit Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ferny Angeles Paz and Miho Kowase, rising sophomores on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, claimed the doubles title at the 2014 ITA Midwest Summer Circuit tournament in Bloomington, Ind., Monday. The duo won the title with an 8-6 victory over Ohio State classmates Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus, who claimed the championship at the ITA summer circuit tournament at Purdue earlier this summer. Both tandems were No. 1-4 seeds in the Bloomington bracket.

De Santis, the No. 2 seed, reached the singles championship where she fell to top seed Brooke Austin of Florida. De Santis, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, beat No. 3 seed Nelle Youel of Northern Illinois in the semifinals to reach the title match. She had a victory over a No. 5-8 seed from Northwestern in the quarterfinals and topped a No. 9-16 seed from Miami (Ohio) in the Round of 16.

The duo of Angeles Paz and Kowase advanced to the final with an 8-4 victory in the semifinals over No. 1-4 seed Chatt and Rischbieth of Northwestern. The Buckeye tandem also had wins over pairs from Wright State, Bradley and Xavier.

De Santis and Niehaus posted victories over teams from Toledo/Cincinnati, Washington and Lee/Cincinnati and Northern Illinois before downing the tandem of Huck and Huck from IFPF/Toledo, 8-2, in the semifinals.


 

 

No. 5-8 seeds Kowase and Niehaus both reached the singles quarterfinals, while Angeles Paz, a 9-16 seed, advanced to the Round of 16.
