May 18, 2000
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State's Monica Rincon (So., Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer West) was named the ITA Player to Watch in the Midwest Region, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced. The award goes to a player who has had an outstanding season, has not yet won an ITA Grand Slam singles title and is expected to perform at a high level the rest of her career. The criteria also include a player's sportsmanship and character. The national award winner, selected from eight regional honorees, will be announced Sunday.
Rincon, a 2000 all-Big Ten team member, leads the Buckeyes with a 30-9 record that ranks first on the single-season wins record list. She earned her first-ever national ranking earlier this spring and is currently ranked No. 101 (tied). She is 19-6 this spring and improved her career record to 53-24.
Rincon qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships with partner Kristy Dascoli (Jr., Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Academy), the Midwest Region's Player to Watch in 1998. The duo, ranked No. 23 by the ITA, has won its last 11 matches and is 19-5 this season. Rincon leads the squad with a 27-9 doubles record this season.
The NCAA Doubles Championships will be held Monday through Friday on the Pepperdine campus in Malibu, Calif.
