COLUMBUS, Ohio - Six Ohio State teams - men's and women's cross country, men's golf, women's gymnastics, women's tennis and women's volleyball - have been honored with public recognition awards, the NCAA announced Wednesday. These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the Top 10 percent in each sport based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR).
"This excellent performance speaks to the commitment of our student-athletes toward obtaining their degrees and to the support that they receive from their coaches and our terrific academic support staff," Professor John P. Bruno, Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative, said. "This recognition from the NCAA demonstrates that our student-athletes are successfully balancing academic benchmarks with the challenges of athletic competition."
The Ohio State women's tennis team earns a Top 10 spot for the fifth year in a row, while women's volleyball has been recognized each of the last three years and women's gymnastics also was recognized last year. In its history, women's cross country has been recognized five times, but this is the first honor since 2008. Both men's golf and men's cross country receive their first public recognition this year.
In the 10th year of APR data for most teams, the scores provide a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.
The Buckeye women's tennis, women's volleyball, men's cross country and men's golf teams each joined four other Big Ten programs recognized, while women's cross country and women's gymnastics each have four total Big Ten programs on the list.
