Scarlet and Gray Travel West to Face UNLV, Marquette

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 56-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (8-4, 1-0 B1G) looks to extend its five-match win streak as it heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for two matches this week. The Buckeyes will take on host UNLV (5-5) at 10 a.m. PT Wednesday and Marquette (6-4) at 10 a.m. PT Friday at the Frank and Vicki Fertitta Tennis Complex as they close out their non-conference slate.
LAST TIME OUT
The Scarlet and Gray earned their second victory over a ranked opponent, downing No. 75 Princeton, 6-1, at home, Saturday. The Buckeyes claimed two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point before winning five of six singles matches at the Varsity Tennis Center.
IN THE RANKINGS
Ohio State was ranked No. 56 in the most recent rankings released Tuesday by the ITA. In singles, freshman Gabriella De Santis is ranked No. 116. She is 10-8 this season and has a 2-2 ledger vs. ranked opponents, with victories over then-No. 45 Joelle Kissell of North Carolina State and then-No. 38 Kiah Generette of Baylor.
The Rebels are led by No. 46-ranked Lucia Batta who holds a 6-4 record at the No. 1 singles position with two wins over ranked opponents this spring. Alongside Santa Shumilina, the UNLV duo has captured three-consecutive doubles matches and is 5-2 on court two this spring in doubles competition. The squad most recently fell to No. 17 Michigan, 7-0.
Marquette will face UNLV Tuesday before facing the Scarlet and Gray on a neutral court. The Golden Eagles are led by junior Ali Dawson who has captured five straight singles matches and seven of her last 10 singles matches. In its last match, Marquette was downed by Minnesota at home, 6-1.
Freshman Sandy Niehaus extended her win streak to 10 singles matches with a victory vs. Princeton to capture her 20th win of the season. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has not dropped a match since Jan. 18 vs. Baylor. In doubles play, the freshman duo of Miho Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz has topped six straight opponents, while Gabriella De Santis and Niehaus have won four straight.
The Buckeyes will return to B1G action March 21 vs. Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., before hosting Michigan State March 23 in Columbus, Ohio.
