COLUMBUS, Ohio – Francesca Di Lorenzo, a sophomore on the No. 2-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team, has been named the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
In the ITA rankings this week, Di Lorenzo, who is 17-1 overall this season, maintained her spot as the No. 1 singles player. She is joined in the rankings by six Buckeyes – No. 42 Miho Kowase, No. 53 Anna Sanford, No. 57 Gabriella De Santis, No. 84 Sandy Niehaus, No. 117 Olivia Sneed and No. 120 Ferny Angeles Paz. Di Lorenzo and Kowase comprise the nation’s No. 26-ranked doubles team, with the tandem of De Santis and Niehaus ranked 47th. The Buckeyes, who are 9-1 this season, moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 in this week’s poll.
In team victories vs. No. 10 Michigan and Penn State last weekend, Di Lorenzo picked up two singles wins and a doubles victory. Friday vs. No. 26 Brienne Minor of Michigan, Di Lorenzo responded to her first loss of the season with a straight set victory over her ranked foe, dropping just four total games. Sunday vs. Penn State, Di Lorenzo and partner Miho Kowase lost just one game in doubles to help the Buckeyes win the doubles point and Di Lorenzo was a 6-3, 6-2 winner on court one in singles.
Di Lorenzo and the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes (9-1) host two matches this weekend, taking on Miami at noon Saturday and No. 10 Baylor at noon Sunday. Both matches will be played inside the Varsity Tennis Center (880 W. Henderson Road) and admission is free.
