Ohio State to Compete in ITA Kickoff Weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 72-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team will return to action Friday in Coral Gables, Fla., for ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Buckeyes will face No. 9 Miami Friday and No. 65 LSU or No. 59 South Florida Saturday in the two-day event at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Ohio State started off the spring slate splitting its doubleheader vs. No. 19 Baylor and Prairie View A&M. After dropping the doubles point vs. the Lady Bears, Gabriella De Santis, Noelle Malley and Nicole Flower all claimed wins in singles competition, but the Buckeyes were edged out by Baylor. The Buckeyes bounced back later in the day, blanking Prairie View A&M, 7-0. De Santis, Miho Kowase, Grainne O’Neill, Ferny Angeles Paz, Sandy Niehaus and Flower all won their singles matches in straight sets to secure the shutout.

Freshman Gabriella De Santis claimed her second career win over a ranked opponent vs. No. 19 Baylor Jan. 18. The Caracas, Venezuela, native defeated No. 38-ranked Kiah Generette, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-4) in the season opener. In the fall, De Santis knocked off No. 45 Joelle Kissell of North Carolina State Oct. 27 at the Tennessee Fall Invite.



No. 9 Miami occupys a pair of ranked singles and doubles spots in the ITA polls. Sophomore Stephanie Wagner is ranked No. 32, while sophomore Kelsey Laurente, who upset Texas’ No. 22-ranked Breaunna Addison Jan. 18, checks in at No. 64. In the doubles poll, Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno hold the No. 29 spot and the Hurricane duo of Brittany Dubins and Stephanie Wagner are ranked 55th overall.

Ohio State is 1-4 all-time vs. Miami. The teams last met in 2000 when Ohio State posted a 5-3 win over the Hurricanes to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.

No. 65 Louisiana State opened its spring slate collecting two victories in a home-opening doubleheader. The Tigers defeated Nicholls 4-2 in the first match and followed with a 5-1 victory vs. Southern.

The Buckeyes are 1-2 all-time vs. Louisiana State. Ohio State fell to Louisiana State on the road, 4-2, in 2012.

No. 59 South Florida collected a 4-3 win vs. Syracuse  at home to start the spring season. The Bulls then traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete in the Michigan Invitational Jan. 18-20 where the squad earned victories over ranked opponents in singles and doubles competitions.

The Scarlet and Gray is 0-9 all-time vs. South Florida. The Bulls notched a 6-1 victory over the Buckeyes to start the 2012 season. 

The Buckeyes will host their home opener Jan. 31 with a doubleheader vs. Syracuse at 1 p.m. and Youngstown State at 6 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio at the Varsity Tennis Center.
