Ohio State Records Six Victories in Final Day of Lady Vol Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the final day of the Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., the Ohio State women’s tennis team claimed a total of six victories Sunday. The Buckeyes posted five singles victories against NC State and one doubles win vs. host Tennessee in the hidden dual format tournament. Highlighting the day was sophomore Kelsey Dieters’ victory over No. 19-ranked Joelle Kissell of North Carolina State.
Overall, the Buckeyes posted 12 singles victories and four doubles victories in the three-day tournament.
Dieters tallied her second singles victories of the tournament over a ranked player after topping No. 19 Kissell of NC State, winning both sets in a tiebreaker (7-6, 7-6). Saturday, Dieters posted a win over No. 18 Brynn Boren of Tennessee.
Senior Fidan Manashirova defeated Elisha Hande of NC State in two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to go undefeated in singles matchups during all three days of the tournament.
Senior Kara Cecil topped NC State’s Sophie Nelson, 6-1, 6-1, while redshirt freshman Nicole Flower held off Nicole Martinez of NC State, 6-2, 7-5. Junior Noelle Malley pulled through in the third set against Chloe Smith of NC State after splitting the first two, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
The Buckeye duo of junior Kelsey Becker and Flower powered over Tennessee’s Sara Toti and Mimi Fotopoulos, 8-1.
The Volunteers claimed the singles and doubles championships of the tournament. Kata Szekely was named singles champion after compiling 16 points throughout the tournament, while Szekely and teammate Brynn Boren were declared the doubles champions.
The Scarlet and Gray will conclude their fall campaign in Tempe, Ariz., at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Nov. 9-11.
