Buckeyes Hit the Courts in Tennessee

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., for the UT Fall Invite, marking the squad’s sixth appearance in the tournament. The four teams – Ohio State, Tennessee, Wake Forest and Arizona State – squared off in singles and doubles in a dual match style.

Senior Olivia Sneed led the Buckeyes, winning all three of her singles matches. 


Day One (Friday)
The Buckeyes took on Wake Forest in singles, with Olivia Sneed and freshman Mary Beth Hurley prevailing in three sets. Freshman Shiori Fukuda and redshirt sophomore Danielle Wolf both dropped three-set decisions to the Deacons, with Andrea Ballinger, who faced a Tennessee player, also falling in three sets.

In doubles, Ohio State suffered two losses, with the tandems of seniors Anna Sanford and Sneed, along with junior Andrea Ballinger and freshman Maria Tyrina, competing.

Day Two (Saturday)
The Buckeyes took on the host Volunteers in singles, going 5-1, with straight-set wins by Shiori Fukuda on court one, Anna Sanford on court two, Olivia Sneed on court three and Maria Tyrina on court five. On court six, Mary Beth Hurley rallied from a set down to win her match.

The Buckeyes were 3-3 in doubles, facing Wake Forest in two rounds. Sneed and Sanford, Fukuda and Tyrina and Andrea Ballinger and Danielle Wolf all went 1-1 on the day.

Day Three (Sunday)
The Buckeyes closed out play with singles matches vs. Arizona State and doubles vs. Tennessee.

In singles, four matches were held vs. the Sun Devils, with the teams splitting the matches. Senior Anna Sanford won on court won in three sets and classmate Olivia Sneed was a straight-set winner on court two.

The Buckeyes swept three doubles matches vs. the Volunteers. Sanford and Sneed won 6-3 on court one and freshmen Shiori Fukuda and Maria Tyrina won by the same score on court two. On court three, the tandem of junior Andrea Ballinger and freshman Mary Beth Hurley posted a 6-2 decision.

Four Buckeyes will head to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells and Palm Desert, Calif. Shiori Fukuda, the ITA Midwest Regional runner-up, has been selected for singles and will pair with classmate Maria Tyrina in doubles. The senior tandem of Anna Sanford and Olivia Sneed received a spot in the doubles tournament.

Andrea Ballinger and Mary Beth Hurley will travel to Tempe, Ariz., for the ASU Fall Thunderbird Nov. 3-5.
