COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s team closed out the 2012 USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Champaign, Ill., Sunday afternoon. The Buckeye duo of Kelsey Dieters and Kara Cecil represented Ohio State in the main draw doubles, while senior Fidan Manashirova competed in the singles main draw.
The sophomore tandem of Dieters and Cecil were defeated by Notre Dame’s Julie Sabacinksi and Britney Sanders, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. Sabacinkski/Sanders will play for the doubles title Monday against Melissa Kopinski and Rachel White of Illinois.
Senior Manashriova faced Matea Cutura of DePaul and dropped a 6-2, 7-6(2) decision in the round of 16.
Play will continue at 11 a.m. CT with the singles finalists and doubles champions earning spots in the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships.
Overall, the Buckeyes posted five qualifying singles win with redshirt freshman Nicole Flower earning a spot in the main draw singles. The team also notched three doubles main draw and three singles main draw victories.
Ohio State will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Tennessee Fall Invite Oct. 26-28. The fall season wraps up in early November with the ITA National Indoors and the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
