Nicole Flower, a member of the Ohio State women's tennis team, defeated Misa Kedzierski of Illinois 6-4,6-4 Friday to earn a spot in the singles main draw at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional in Champaign, Ill. Flower will join Fidan Manashirova and Kelsey Dietersin the field of 64.
Kara Cecil lost to Emmie Marx of Illinois State in the third round of qualifiers 6-3, 7-6(4), while Noelle Malleywas defeated by Klara Supejova of Eastern Michigan in the final round of qualifying 6-3, 6-3.
The senior tandem of Gabrielle Steele and Manashirova had a first round bye and beat Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer of IPFW, 8-6, and will face Jennifer Kelner and Chrissie McGaffican of Notre Dame in the round of 16 at 9 a.m. CT Saturday.
The sophomore duo of Dieters and Cecil were also granted a first round bye and advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Amy Zhu and Sarah Lee of Michigan, 8-3 in the second round. They will compete against Brittany Wowchuck and Alicia Barnett of Northwestern starting at 9 a.m. CT Saturday.
In the singles main draw, Flower will face Hannah Berner of Wisconsin at 1:15 p.m. CT and Dieters will face Katherine White of Notre Dame at 10 a.m. CT. Manashirova has a first round bye and will compete at 3:30 p.m. CT against the winner between Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan and Chrissie McGaffigan of Notre Dame.
