Buckeyes Advance on Day Two of ITA Midwest Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Grâinne O'Neill and freshman Sandy Niehaus, members of the Ohio State women's tennis team, advanced to the singles main draw of the 2013 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday morning in Ann Arbor, Mich., after claiming third-round victories in straight sets. The Buckeye duo of O'Neill and freshman Miho Kowase notched back-to-back victories to remain in contention in the doubles main draw.
Ohio State is the only squad to earn more than one berth from the singles qualifier. O'Neill and Niehaus will join Kowase and Gabriella De Santis in the singles main draw competition Saturday.
In the third round of the qualifying singles draw, Blessington, Ireland, native O'Neill defeated BGSU's Nikki Chiricosta, 7-6, 6-2, to earn her spot in the main draw, while Niehaus topped Big Ten opponent Maddie Lipp of Northwestern, 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Ferny Angeles Paz dropped her qualifying match to DePaul's Jarret Fisher, 6-1, 7-5.
After claiming their first match of the doubles main draw in an 8-7 (4) tiebreaker vs. Wisconsin, Kowase and O'Neill notched an 8-6 win vs. Eastern Michigan to advance to the round of 16. The duo will face Illinois' Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong Saturday morning for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Flower and Noelle Malley tallied an 8-3 victory vs. Toledo in the first round of the doubles main draw before falling to Notre Dame, 8-4. The freshman tandem of Niehaus and De Santis posted an 8-4 first-round victory vs. Illinois before dropping their second-round match to Notre Dame, 8-6.
In consolation singles play, Nicole Flower tabbed a win in her singles consolation match vs. Mariya Toncheva of Eastern Michigan, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (9).
Action will continue with main draw singles and doubles Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
