COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision vs. Iowa in the first round of the 2013 Big Ten Tournament Thursday morning at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts in Bloomington, Ind. Despite an early lead after winning the doubles point and the first singles match off the court, the ninth-seeded Buckeyes were unable to outlast the eighth-seeded Hawkeyes.
Iowa's No. 43-ranked tandem of Ruth Seaborne and Morven McCulloch notched the first doubles victory of the morning with an 8-2 win over junior Noelle Malley and senior Kara Cecil on court one. Seniors Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele rallied to overcome Katie Zordani and Annette Dohanics, 8-6, on court three and even the score at 1-1 in doubles competition. With the doubles decision laying on the outcome of court two, sophomore Kelsey Dieters and freshman Grainne O'Neill prevailed over Caitlin Hindmarsh and Shelby Talcott, 9-7, to clinch the point for the Buckeyes and take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles competition, O'Neill extended the Buckeye lead to 2-0 with a victory in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Dohanics on court five. The Hawkeyes responded with victories on courts one and three to even the score at 2-2. At the No. 1 position, No. 61-ranked Dieters fell to No. 89-ranked Seaborne, 6-3, 6-3. Tied at 4-4 in the second set, Steele was unable to hold off McCulloch and dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court three.
Hindmarsh topped Cecil, 6-2, 6-2, on court four to give Iowa a 3-2 advantage over the Buckeyes. Zordani secured the team victory for the Hawkeyes with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Nicole Flower on court six. Manashirova and Talcott did not finish their match on court two.
Ohio State completes the 2013 season with a 10-14 record (3-8 Big Ten). Manashirova led the Buckeyes with a team-best 24 singles wins this season, including a team-high 15 wins in dual matches and eight conference wins. Steele notched 23 singles wins this season and tied for a team-high 18 doubles wins this season with Dieters. Dieters earned nine wins on court one, including four over ranked opponents. Paired with Cecil, the Buckeye duo of Dieters and Cecil formed the winningest tandem with 11 wins on the season.
Steele wraps her career tied for fourth in program history with 90 career singles wins, with Manashirova fifth with 89 career singles victories.
Iowa advances to the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals to face No. 6-ranked and No. 1 seed Michigan at 10 a.m. Friday.
