COLUMBUS, Ohio –  Playing in their first outdoor match this season at the Ohio State University Outdoors Courts, the No. 62-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team was defeated by No.16-ranked Northwestern, 6-1, Sunday afternoon. Kelsey Becker and Grainne O’Neill posted a doubles victory, while Fidan Manashirova notched her first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season.

“Northwestern’s a good team and we knew that coming in to today’s match,” Melissa Schaub, interim head coach, said. “The scoreboard’s going to say 6-1 but there were a lot of close matches. We played much better today and took a step in the right direction.”

Late runs on courts one and two enabled the Wildcats to capture the doubles point over the Buckeyes. Becker and O’Neill teamed up to notch to their third-consecutive conference win this season against the Wildcats. Tied at 5-5 in the match, the duo pushed ahead to defeat Belinda Niu and Kate Turvy, 8-6, and hand the Northwestern tandem their second loss of the season on court three.

On court one, Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the No. 9-ranked Northwestern duo of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton. After rallying back to even the score at 5-5, the Wildcat tandem won the last three games to take the match, 8-5. Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett clinched the doubles point with another come-from-behind victory for the Wildcats against the senior duo of Manashirova and Gabby Steele. The Buckeyes had extended their lead to 5-2 on court two before a 6-1 run by the Wildcats propelled Northwestern over the senior duo, 8-6.

In singles competition, Northwestern captured the team victory with straight set wins in the first four matches off the court. Steele was topped by Mushrefova, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage. Nida Hamilton defeated Nicole Flower, 6-3, 6-4 on court six, while O’Neill fell to Barnett, 7-5, 6-3.

The No.1 position featured a contest of two nationally-ranked players. No.45-ranked Dieters fell to No.55 Turvy, 6-1, 6-3. Dieters is 3-6 vs. nationally-ranked opponents this season.

Manashirova tallied a point for the Buckeyes with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over No.117-ranked Corning at the No.2 position. The Elk Grove, Calif., native leads Ohio State with seven conference wins this season and has earned a team-high 23 singles win this season.

After winning the first set, 6-2, Cecil dropped the second against Northwestern’s Niu to force a super tiebreaker on court three. Down 4-8 in the tiebreaker, Cecil rallied to bring the score within two at 6-8 before Niu broke away to claim the victory, 10-6.

The Buckeyes will travel for the last time this regular season to take on Michigan State Friday in East Lansing, Mich.
