COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's tennis team dropped the opening match of its Big Ten Conference weekend road trip, falling to No. 18-ranked Nebraska, 4-0, in Lincoln, Neb., Friday. It was the first match between the teams as conference foes.
The Buckeyes wrap up the trip when they face Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, at noon ET Sunday. Next weekend the squad will host home matches vs. Wisconsin April 6 and Minnesota April 8 in Columbus.
The Cornhuskers earned the doubles point with victories on courts one and three and then won the first three singles matches to clinch the team victory. The last three singles matches were abandoned because of inclement weather.
The Huskers secured an early lead by taking doubles decisions at the No. 1 and 3 spots before Ohio State picked up a win on court two. The Buckeye duo of junior Kara Cecil and senior Kelsey Haviland handed Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova their first loss, 8-6, to wrap up doubles.
Nebraska came out strong in singles, taking three straight-set decisions to clinch the match, 4-0. Weatherholt, ranked 40th in the nation, finished first on court one, downing Cecil, 6-2, 6-3.
Madeleine Geibert followed by defeating junior Fidan Manashirova, 6-0, 6-2, on court three and Maike Zeppernick sealed the victory for the Huskers with a 7-5, 6-2 win over sophomore Tiffany Dittmer on court six.
Matches were abandoned on courts two, four and five. Nebraska's Veresova, ranked 117th nationally, led Haviland on court two, 7-5, 4-1. Junior Gabby Steele and Stefanie Weinstein split the first two sets, 6-4, 5-7, with Steele winning the first, before starting a third set on court four. Freshman Kelsey Dieters trailed 109th-ranked Janine Weinreich of Nebraska, 7-6, 5-2, at the fifth spot.
