COLUMBUS, Ohio– In its second Big Ten road match of the weekend, the No. 53-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (8-8, 1-3 Big Ten) was downed by No. 38-ranked Indiana (12-5, 1-2 Big Ten), 5-2, Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.
Consecutive wins on courts one and two in doubles play clinched the doubles point for the Hoosiers. On court one, Leslie Hureau and Carolyn Chupa tallied a win over Kelsey Dieters and Grainne O'Neill, 8-4, while Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murdy defeated Noelle Malley and Kara Cecil, 8-4, on court two to earn the point for Indiana. Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele rallied back from an early deficit on court three to prevail over Sophie Garre and Katie Klyczek in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (4).
Chupa notched the first of four-consecutive singles victories for the Hoosiers with a straight-set win over Cecil, 6-0, 6-2, on court three. O’Neill was downed by Garre, 6-1, 6-0 on court five to push the Indiana lead to 3-0 and on court two Manashirova fell to reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Week Klyczek, 6-3, 6-3, to capture the win for the Hoosiers. On court six, Jayawickrema defeated Noelle Malley, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3), for IU’s fifth point.
The Buckeyes wrapped up the match with victories at the No. 1 and 4 positions against the Hoosiers. No. 53-ranked Dieters recorded her second singles victory of the weekend with a win against Hureau, 6-3, 7-5, to put the Buckeyes on the board. After the winning the tiebreaker in set one, Steele closed out Kauss, 6-2 in the second set to record her sixth victory at the No. 4 position this season and her team-high tying 19th singles win of the campaign. Dieters and Steele both have 10 dual-match singles wins this spring.
On the year, the Buckeyes are 2-3 in road contests and 2-5 in competitions against ranked opponents.
