Ohio State Dominates in Doubleheader vs. NKU, Cincinnati

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 59-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (7-4, 1-0 B1G) collected a pair of wins in its doubleheader vs. Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes collected their fifth shutout of the season, downing Northern Kentucky, 7-0, before defeating Cincinnati, 6-1, in their second match of the day at the Varsity Tennis Center. With the wins, the Scarlet and Gray improve to 5-0 at home and 7-0 when winning the doubles point this season.

The Buckeyes swept doubles competition in both outings and claimed 11 of 12 singles matches. Freshmen Sandy Niehaus and Miho Kowase extended their singles win streaks to nine and seven matches, respectively, while the Buckeye tandem of Ferny Angeles Paz and Kowase posted their fifth-consecutive doubles match this spring.

The Buckeyes started the afternoon with a sweep of doubles competition vs. Northern Kentucky. The senior tandem of Kelsey Becker and Noelle Malley notched an 8-1 victory over Sierra Nellessen and Yasmine Xantos on court three, while the Buckeye duo of Angeles Paz and Kowase claimed their match vs. Nicole Soutar and Marta Romeo, 8-2. Gabriella De Santis and Niehaus completed the sweep, defeating Maria Voscekova and Danielle Donahue, 8-1, on court one.


 

 

In singles play vs. Northern Kentucky, O’Neill and Malley posted back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 wins vs. Romeo and Nellessen on courts four and five, respectively, to extend the Buckeye lead to 3-0. Becker collected her first win of the spring season to seal the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1, win vs. Xantos on court six.

At the No. 3 position, redshirt sophomore Nicole Flower topped Soutar, 6-2, 6-0, while Angeles Paz won 6-1, 6-0 on court two. Kowase notched her second victory at the No. 1 singles position this spring to secure the shutout in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.

Ohio State welcomed Cincinnati for the second match of its doubleheader Wednesday evening. Angeles Paz and Kowase paired up to earn their fifth-straight doubles win this spring, defeating Katya Bure and Carly Wilson, 8-0. De Santis and Niehaus followed with an 8-2 victory vs. Witte and Bellinger. Down 5-2 in the match, Malley and O’Neill fashioned a 6-2 run to triumph over Poggensee-Wei and O’Gara in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (3), and complete the second sweep of doubles competition of the day for the Buckeyes.

O’Neill finished first on court six in singles play vs. the Bearcats, earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory vs. Carly Wilson. Flower claimed her second victory of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win vs. Wille on court six. At the No. 4 position, Niehaus clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory to extend her win streak to nine singles matches in a row.

At the No. 1 position, De Santis dropped her match to Poggensee-Wei, 6-1, 6-4, before Kowase collected her eighth straight win of the spring slate, topping Witte, 6-3, 6-3. Angeles Paz wrapped up the match with a straight set victory vs. O’Gara, 6-3, 6-1, on court three.

Up next, Ohio State will host Princeton at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center. The squad will then travel to Las Vegas, Nev., during spring break to compete against UNLV March 12 and Marquette March 14.
