Ohio State Drops 6-1 Decision to Tulsa

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 61-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (5-4, 0-1 Big Ten) dropped a 6-1 decision against No. 33 Tulsa (6-3-1, 1-0 C-USA) in a neutral site matchup at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville, Ark. The contest marked the first meeting all-time between the two teams and the second ranked team the Buckeyes have faced in Arkansas this weekend.
Playing against the No. 12-ranked Tulsa tandem of Isaura Enrique and Samantha Vickers, the Buckeye duo of Kelsey Dieters and Kara Cecil dropped an 8-2 loss against the ranked pair. On court two, Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele lost to Michelle Farley and Saana Saarteinen, 8-6. The Hurricanes claimed the doubles point, despite the matchup on court three going unfinished.
No. 93 Fidan Manashirova earned a point for the Buckeyes in singles play, defeating Maria Sant'Anna in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The win marked her 14th singles victory this season.
The No. 1 position featured a matchup of two ranked players. No. 53 Dieters was defeated by No. 55 Vickers in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. On court two, Cecil rallied back to force a third set against Enrique, but fell, 6-1, in the third set. Grainne O’Neill dropped a second-set tiebreaker to lose her match to Saana Saarteinen, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Noelle Malley was defeated in straight sets by Carol Benito, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Ohio State returns to the Varsity Indoor Center for a doubleheader vs. Penn State and Youngstown State March 3. The Buckeyes will face the Nittany Lions at noon and then take on the Penguins at 6 p.m. Their competition against Penn State is the second Big Ten match for the Buckeyes this spring.
