COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's tennis team (3-4, 0-0 B1G) fell to No. 38 Kentucky (8-1, 0-0 SEC), 4-2, Friday afternoon in Lexington, Ky., in the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center. Freshmen Sandy Niehaus and Miho Kowase posted singles victories in the loss, extending their spring win streaks to six and four matches, respectively.
In doubles competition, the Buckeye tandem of Gabriella De Santis and Niehaus fell to Aldila Sutjiai and Nadia Ravita, 8-2. Caitlin McGraw and Witten secured the doubles point for the Wildcats vs. Noelle Malley and Grainne O'Neill in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5). Kowase and Ferny Angeles Paz did not finish their match on court three vs. Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff and Kirsten Lewis.
Niehaus notched the first win for Ohio State in singles competition, defeating Morin-Kougoucheff, 6-4, 6-0, in straight sets to post her sixth-consecutive singles win in the spring campaign. Paz fell to Kelsey Dieters on court three, 6-1, 6-4.
On court two, Kowase rallied to force three sets vs. Sutjiadi and extend her win streak to four-consecutive matches with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, victory. The win knotted the score at 2-all.
After claiming the first set at the No. 1 position, No. 78-ranked De Santis lost to No. 56-ranked Ravita, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. The Caracas, Venezuela, native holds a 2-1 record vs. ranked opponents this season. Caitlin McGraw secured the team victory for the Wildcats with a 6-4, 6-1, win over redshirt sophomore Nicole Flower. Court five did not complete play.
The Buckeyes will host Tennessee at 5 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will also be Kids Day with free racquet stenciling, t-shirts and pizza. Admission is free.
