COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (7-0) used four singles wins, including one in three sets, to defeat No. 5 Oklahoma State (7-1), 4-3, in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship quarterfinals Saturday in New Haven, Conn. The Buckeyes will face No. 2 seed North Carolina in the semifinals Sunday.
Ohio State needed four singles wins after dropping the doubles point. Oklahoma State won the first singles match off the court to take a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes then won three singles matches in straight sets to go ahead 3-2. Senior Gabriella De Santis had the first Buckeye win, followed by a victory from sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo who came back from being down 5-2 to win the second set. Senior Ferny Angeles Paz put a third win on the board for the Scarlet and Gray before the Cowgirls answered to tie it up. It all came down to court five, where senior Miho Kowase rallied after dropping the first set for a three-set win to clinch the victory for the sixth-seeded Buckeyes over No. 3 seed Oklahoma State.
“This was just a really good college tennis match on both sides,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach said. “We rebounded well in singles after a rough doubles point. We competed at every spot today and that's what we need to continue doing moving forward. This win definitely feels good but we will have another tough one tomorrow so we need to be ready.”
In doubles, the Buckeye tandem of Angeles Paz and junior Olivia Sneed were topped 6-1 by the Oklahoma State pair of Katarina Adamovic and Victoriya Lushkova on court three. On court two, Kowase and Di Lorenzo fell 6-2 to Cowgirl tandem of Aliona Bolsova and Sofia Blanco. The duo of Sandy Niehaus and junior Anna Sanford was up 5-3 on court one over the No. 5-ranked pair of Vladica Babic and Carla Tur Mari when play was suspended.
The Cowgirls claimed the first singles point on court four when Bolsova topped Niehaus 6-2, 7-6 (4).
The Buckeyes got on the board when No. 68-ranked De Santis defeated No. 33 Babic on court three, 6-4, 7-5. No. 1 Di Lorenzo posted a 6-3, 7-5 win shortly afterwards over No. 10-ranked Lushkova on court one to tie the match at 2-2.
On court six, Angeles Paz notched a 6-3, 7-5 victory over No. 86 Lena Ruppert to put Ohio State ahead for the first time. The Cowgirls answered when No. 56 Adamovic topped No. 55 Sanford in a close three set match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, on court two to tie the match.
After dropping a close first set on court five, 6-4, to No. 42 Tur Mari, No. 84 Kowase battled back to win the second 7-5 and dominated the third, 6-1, to clinch the match for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State is making its third appearance at the national team indoor championships and its second straight trip to the semifinals.
