Ohio State Prepares to Defend North Regional Crown Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State synchronized swimming team will return to competition Saturday in St. Louis, Mo., for the 2014 North Regional Championships at the Pattonville Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes look to collect their 24th-consecutive title.

Behind victories in solo, team and trio competitions, Ohio State tallied its fifth win of the season at Incarnate Word. Senior Yuliya Maryanko earned first place in solo with a score of 85.5 points, while the Buckeye trio of Chelsea Aton, Lauren Nicholson and Katie Spada took first in trio. The Scarlet Team, composed of Aton, Emma Baranski, Morgan Boneberg, Lorraine Hack, Elizabeth Davidson, Nicholson, Spada and Khadija Zanotto took first with 85.1 points.  

Last season, the Buckeyes captured the event with a five-point victory over Lindenwood to secure their 23rd-consecutive title. As hosts of the event at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, Ohio State earned first place finishes in the A and B Technical events, duet and team competitions to win the event.



Maryanko clinched the A technical competition with a score of 85.981, and Julia Gaylard posted a score of 70.634 to claim the B technical competition. Maryanko and U.S. Collegiate Athlete of the Year Paige Ramsey placed first in the duet competition with a score of 88.833. The Scarlet Team, comprised of Aton, Kayley Colville, Katie LaBounty, Maryanko, Nicholson, Spada and Zanotto, topped all teams with a score of 90.000.

The Buckeyes will compete in the U.S. Collegiate Championships March 19 in Oxford, Ohio. The Scarlet and Gray have captured four of the last five U.S. Collegiate Championships (2009-12).
