Jaspeado Wins Three Mexican National Titles
Dec. 22, 2017

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State freshman swimmer Natalia Jaspeado claimed three Mexican swimming national titles earlier this week competing at the Mexican Swimming Winter Nationals in Guadalajara, Mexico.

All three of her national titles came in distance events; she won the 400 individual medley, 800 freestyle and 1,500 freestyle. Her races were in short-course meters, slightly different lengths that what she has been swimming this fall at Ohio State. Jaspeado swam an astounding 21 times during the four days of competition that ranged from Dec. 17-20.

“Natalia is a tough and versatile swimmer,” director of swimming and diving Bill Dorenkott said. “The fact that she raced 21 times in four days speaks to her toughness. We are thrilled that she was able to go home and swim in front of family and friends, and to swim in the fashion that she did, that was icing on the cake.”

In addition to Jaspeado’s stellar performance, Aliena Schmidtke and Freya Rayner had impressive showings in Europe. Schmidtke, a former Buckeye swimmer from 2013-15, set two German national records at the 2017 European Short Course Championships. In the 50 butterfly, she clocked a national record of 25.49 to finish in fourth place, and she was a member of the 4x50 mixed medley relay that clocked a national record of 1:37.83. Another freshman that is currently representing the Scarlet and Gray, Rayner, swam very well at the British Commonwealth Trials; she clocked a time of 25.74 in the 50 freestyle to earn a fifth-place finish.

“Ohio State swimming has a proud and storied tradition of competitive excellence around the world,” Dorenkott noted. “This winter break witnessed Buckeyes on the award podium at the British Commonwealth Trials, European Championships and Mexican National Championships. Couple this with our success earlier this month at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships and we believe that our program is on the rise.”

The Ohio State swimming and diving program will return to action on Jan. 5-6 in a triangular meet against Kentucky and Toledo in Lexington, Ky.
