July 24, 2015

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Another day, another strong performance from the Ohio State women’s swimming contingent at the 2015 USA Swimming Speedo Sectional Meet, hosted by the Ohio State Swim Club at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. On Thursday, the Buckeyes came away with wins in each event contested.

The day kicked off with the Ohio State Swim Club 200 medley relay of Camey Rabold, Taylor Vargo, Meg Bailey and Macie McNichols securing a win with a time of 1:55.99. The Ohio State Swim Club (OSSC) is the USA club team housed on the campus of Ohio State University.

In finals of the 200 freestyle, former Buckeye Sam Cheverton, a 2012 Olympian and member of the Canadian National Team, placed first with a Sectional record mark of 2:00.44. Rabold and Katy Luchansky both brought home Top 5 finishes, placing third and fourth, respectively. A slew of Buckeyes – Cheverton, Rabold, Luchansky, Cara Norris, Erin Dunseith, Kathleen Cook and Kaitlyn Ferrara – were under 2:05 in the event.

The Buckeye 400 individual medley pair of Lindsey Clary and Meg Bailey put forth a strong one, two performance. The tandem finished under the U.S. Olympic Trail standard, as Clary touched first in 4:47.70 and Bailey followed closely with a 4:52.89.

To round out the day, Ohio State’s 400 freestyle relay quartet of Alex Norris, Annie Jongekrijg, Macie McNichols and Sam Cheverton claimed another win for the Scarlet and Gray and demolished the previous Sectional record with a time of 3:48.16. The previous record, set by Club Wolverine in 2009, was 3:51.13.

To note, rising sophomore Cheyenne Meek led off the 400 freestyle relay with a 57.14. She had never been under 58.4 prior to this summer. Meek has had a busy summer thus far, as she is also interning with the Ohio State Department of Athletics. You can follow her blog here: http://go.osu.edu/wswim_meek.

The meet has also served as a great opportunity for many of the incoming Ohio State freshmen class to race their future teammates. Maria Coy, Mikayla Murphy, Brookley Garry, Cara Norris, Claire Gilmore, Kerrigan Vargo and Kaylee Witkiewicz are all racing this week.
