Behind two Top 3 finishes from All-American Tim Phillips and two record-breaking performances from rising junior Steven Zimmerman, the Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team showcased an impressive performance at the Phillips 66 National Championships & World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. Overall, the Buckeye contingent earned nine Top 20 finishes over five days of elite competition, June 25-29.

A current member of the U.S. National Team, Phillips started the meet with a 35th-place showing in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.04. The real show, however, came when Phillips swam in his signature events the 50 and 100 butterfly. With the second-fastest time in the 50 butterfly coming out of prelims, Phillips remained consistent in finals placing third with a time of 23.69. The Vienna, West Virginia native also took third in the 100 butterfly, shaving his 52.21 prelim time down to 51.86 for finals.

Coming off his first trip to the NCAA championships, Zimmerman continued to build momentum for his junior campaign with a solid showing in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke events in Indy. He kicked off the competition by breaking an Ohio State long course record in the B Final of the 200 backstroke for 10th-place. With a time of 1:59.98, Zimmerman became the first Buckeye swimmer in history to post a time under two minutes in the event. Olympian Itai Chammah set the previous varsity record of 2:00.30 in 2009.

It wasn’t the only Ohio State record Zimmerman dropped at the meet. He also took down Olympian Niksa Roki’s record time of 55.50 in prelims of the 100 backstroke, touching in 55.19. He finished out the event with an 11th-place showing in 55.52. To top off his performance, Zimmerman placed 13th in the 50 backstroke in a time of 25.83.

Rising senior Alex Miller finished strong for 14th-place in the 1500 freestyle with a time of 15:43.09, while breastroke-specialist DJ MacDonald earned a few Top 20 finishes of his own. Building off an 18th-place showing in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.95), MacDonald took 15th with a 28.80 in the 50 breaststroke the following day. A rising sophomore for the Buckeyes, MacDonald also placed 16th in the 100 breaststroke in a finals time of 1:03.19.

Other Buckeyes competing in the meet included rising juniors Andrew Braun and Rowan Williams as well as rising seniors Dak Stone and Garrett Trebilcock. Competing in the 100 breaststroke, Braun took 27th with a time of 2:20.61, while Stone placed 36th in 2:24.84. Williams on the other hand competed in the 200 backstroke, where he placed 38th in 2:06.65. Trebilcock rounded out competition for Ohio State by placing 36th in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.35.

The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team also had a couple representatives at the national meet. Alex Norris, a rising senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, touched 23rd in the 400 freestyle (4:18.02) as well as 32nd in the 200 freestyle (2:02.63). Another rising senior from the squad, Kristyn Fulcher, swam a time of 4:57.06 for 26th in the 400 individual medley.
