COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team is set to compete at the 2013 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships this week at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. The 10 Buckeye participants is one of the largest in recent history and head swimming coach Bill Dorenkott and the squad is ready for the opportunity this weekend at one of the fastest meets in the world.

“We are excited to be a part of swimming and diving’s version of March Madness,” Dorenkott said. “It is a terrific group of young ladies who are eager for the opportunity to race.”

Competition will take place starting Thursday and continue through Saturday. On pool deck for Dorenkott and assistant Liz Hinkleman will be a team that features eight swimmers with NCAA experience, including seniors Shannon Draves, Emily Creran, Kelsey Moran, Angela Severn and juniors Kelly Ann Baird, Alex Norris, Phoebe Cater and Michelle Williams. Freshman Annie Jongekrijg will be making her first appearance at the NCAA championships.


 

 

Guided by diving coach Vince Panzano, redshirt sophomore Cheyenne Cousineau will be competing at her first NCAA championships this week.

NCAA HISTORY
Ohio State has two Top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships – 10th in 1983 and a program-best seventh in 1994 – and 12 Top 20 finishes with the last coming in 2012 when the team placed 20th overall. The Buckeye have placed in the Top 20 in each of the last two seasons under fifth-year head coach Bill Dorenkott.

NCAA CHAMPIONS
Five Ohio State Buckeyes have won NCAA championships: Janelle Bosse (400 IM in 1987); Karen LaFace (1-meter diving in1987); Kim Fugett (3-meter diving in 1988); Natalie Diea (10-meter platform in 2003) and Chelsea Davis (3-meter diving in 2008).

ALL-AMERICANS AND MORE
There have been 28 different swimmers to earn All-American accolades for Ohio State and that group was honored a total of 54 times. The last swimming All-American was Gulsah Gunenc in 2006. A total of 20 divers have been honored as an All-American 46 times with former Big Ten Medal of Honor Winner Bianca Alvarez picking up the last two of those awards in 2012.

2012-13 UPDATE
The Buckeyes, under fifth-year swimming coach Bill Dorenkott and 35th-year diving coach Vince Panzano, are coming off a 10-2 dual meet season and a 3-1 Big Ten dual record. The team finished fourth overall at the Big Ten Championships and placed third overall at the Ohio State Invitational Dec. 2 in Columbus, while earning first at the Northwestern Invitational Feb. 2 in Evanston, Ill. Last summer, the Buckeyes sent a program-record 15 swimmers to the U.S Olympic Trials.

Ohio State’s swimmers and divers are qualified or have been invited to compete in the following events nationals:

Shannon Draves
200 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay

A two-time Big Ten champion in the 200 butterfly, Draves is returning for her third NCAA championships after earning honorable mention All-America honors as part of the 200 medley relay in 2012 … holds the OSU varsity records in two individual events (100 butterfly – 52.29; 200 butterfly – 1:55.12) … advanced to the finals of the 200 butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials last summer … 2011 and 2012 first team All-Big Ten selection …  a part of the record-breaking 400 medley relay team at the 2013 Big Ten Championships.

Emily Creran
200 backstroke

Broke the varsity record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.62 at the team’s Last Chance Meet to qualify for her third-consecutive NCAA championships … placed third overall in the 200 backstroke at the 2013 Big Ten Championships …  qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley … also holds the OSU varsity record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:14.06 … placed third overall in the 200 backstroke at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … earned second team All-Big Ten honors after a runner-up finish in the 200 backstroke at the 2012 Big Ten Championships.

Kelsey Moran
100 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay

Holds the OSU record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.70 set during the 2012 campaign … also a part of three OSU record relay squads, including the 400 medley relay team, which set a record time of 3:33.55 at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … earned second team All-Big Ten honors this season after finishing second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.00 at the conference championships … a part of the record-breaking 400 medley relay team at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … third-consecutive NCAA appearance after earning honorable mention All-America honors last year.

Angela Severn
200 medley relay, 400 medley relay

Earned second team All-Big Ten honors at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … a part of the record-breaking 400 medley relay team at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … will be competing at her third NCAA Championships … earned honorable mention All-America status as a member of the 200 medley relay at the 2012 NCAA championships … holds the OSU varsity record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.54.

Alex Norris
500 freestyle, 800 freestyle relay

Competing at her third-consecutive NCAA championships … qualified for the 500 freestyle after posting an NCAA “B” time of 4:41.30 for fourth overall at the Big Ten Championships … holds the team’s fastest times in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle … was the team’s top point scorer at the conference championships, notching a combined 38 points – the fifth most by any competitor.

Phoebe Cater
400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay

Returning to the NCAA championships for the second-consecutive year as a relay member … part of the 800 freestyle relay squad that posted  a season-best time of 7:13.33 for sixth overall at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … holds the team’s third-fastest times in the 100 freestyle (50.06) and 100 butterfly (55.15), while fourth on the squad in the 200 freestyle (1:48.64).

Michelle Williams
200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay

Will be competing at her second NCAA championships … Ohio State’s fastest swimmer this season in the 50 freestyle (22.70) and 100 freestyle (49.62) in 2013 … earned second team All-Big Ten honors for the second-consecutive season after being a member of the record-breaking 400 medley relay squad at the conference championships.

Annie Jongekrijg
400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay

Competing at her first NCAA championships as a true freshman … a part of the 200 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay teams that placed sixth overall at the Big Ten Championships with season-best time of 1:30.18 and  7:13.33, respectively …  holds the team’s second-fastest times in the 100 freestyle (49.93) and 200 freestyle (1:47.30).

Cheyenne Cousineau
Will be competing at her first NCAA championships … notched a third-place finish on the 3-meter springboard (375.90) at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … 2012 Big Ten Platform Champion … claimed a Big Ten-best four Big Ten Diver of the Week honors in 2012-13. 

KELLY ANN BAIRD*
1650 freestyle

Holds the squad’s fastest time in the 1000 freestyle (9:56.89) and 1650 freestyle (16:20.87) this season … OSU record holder in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:46.94 set during the 2011 campaign … competed at the 2012 NCAA championships in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle events.
