Behind another winning diving performance from senior Bianca Alvarez, the Ohio State women's swimming and diving team concluded day three Friday at the 2012 Big Ten Championships in Iowa.
Ohio State is in third place after the Friday events. Minnesota leads with 456 points, Indiana has 416, Ohio State 401 and fourth-place Wisconsin has 289. The Buckeyes recorded school records Thursday in the 400 medley relay, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Alvarez, who Thursday was the Big Ten champion in the 1-meter competition, won the 3-meter event on Friday with a score of 410.65. Buckeyes Kristen Asman (339.40) and Cheyenne Cousineau (315.70) placed fifth and seventh in the championship final, earning OSU 46 team points in diving Friday.
The team of Kelsey Moran, Jackie Brousseau, Shannon Draves and Michelle Williams started Friday night with a school record-breaking finish in the 400 medley relay. The time of 3:34.41 shattered the previous record of 3:36.70, and gave the team's total score a boost with 30 points added as a result of the fourth-place finish.
Competing in the championship final of the 100 butterfly, Draves and Moran finished in fourth and eighth, respectively; Draves broke her own school record with the time of 53.31 in the final, while Moran followed in 54.59. Ashley Vance and Williams both recorded points for the Buckeyes finishing in 12th and 13th; Vance placed in a time of 54.29 and Williams finished in 54.49. Darcy Fishback followed closely with a 14th-place finish in 54.72.
In the 100 backstroke, Moran took third in 53.14, also a school record, and Lauren Massey finished 21st in 55.74.
Emily Creran placed sixth in the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:14.28, while Kristyn Fulcher finished eleventh in 4:15.00. Angela Severn recorded points for the Buckeyes as well finishing in a time of 4:17.32 for 15th-place, and Kelly Titus finished 19th in 4:16.52.
Catherine Eitel and Brousseau finished back-to-back in the 100 breaststroke each adding to the Buckeye point total with 13th and 14th-place finishes, respectively; Eitel posted a time of 1:02.37 and Brousseau finished in 1:02.38.
Ohio State will begin prelims tomorrow at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 1 p.m. Live results can once again be followed at http://live.iowaswimming.com/swimming/.
