Columbus, Ohio—Fresh off a weekend where she put up two NCAA provisional times and swam personal best times in three separate events, Mikayla Murphy was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Ohio State hosted its annual Winter Invitational last weekend, with representatives from eight other schools competing against the Buckeyes. Over the course of the weekend, Murphy placed first in the finals for both the 100 and 200 backstroke (54.73 and 1:57.33, respectively) and swam the fastest 500 freestyle prelim time at 4:53.40. All three marks represent a new personal best for the Holland, Ohio native.
Murphy is the first Buckeye to earn Freshman of the Week honors since Brittany Menninger in February 2015. Ohio State has now had a winner in each of the three weekly award categories from the Big Ten- Swimmer of the week (Lindsey Clary, Liz Li), Diver of the Week (Hannah Thek), and now Murphy.
It’s an exclamation point on what has been a great regular season for Ohio State. The 2016 Big Ten Championships kick off tomorrow, Wednesday, and you can check out our preview here.
