Jan. 21, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Alex Norris of the No. 19 Ohio State women's swimming and diving team has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced today. The honor is the first of Norris' career.
Norris, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, enjoyed a record-breaking weekend at the Kenyon Winter Invite where she had a hand in establishing four pool records. She set individual marks in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.33), 500-yard freestyle (4:48.51) and 400-yard individual medley (4:21.77) while also swimming on the record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:23.67). Overall, Norris swam in six events and finished first in five of them. As a team, the Buckeyes set five pool records, won 15 of 16 races and collected 795.5 points, ahead of Cincinnati (279), Oakland (246), Kenyon (244.5) and Ashland (140).
Norris' performance at Kenyon came a week after she was second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.38), 200-yard butterfly (2:03.00) and 100-yard freestyle (51.20) in a dual-meet victory over Toledo.
"Alex has set herself up well for the Big Ten's and NCAA's," said head coach Bill Dorenkott. "This is a nice recognition of the hard work she has put into her sport over the past few years."
Ohio State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 when it travels to Ypsilanti, Mich., for a tri-meet with Eastern Michigan and Ball State.
