No. 16 Buckeyes Finish Strong at OSU Invite for Third

In the best field to date at the OSU Invitational, the No. 16 Ohio State women's swimming and diving team closed out a strong weekend of competition with a third-place finish Sunday evening at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. No. 11 Florida won the invite with 837 points, while No. 6 Stanford was second with 815 points.

The Buckeyes combined for 589 total points and head swimming coach Bill Dorenkott said he is excited for what's next with this team.

"I'm really pleased," Dorenkott said. "We raced tough and consistent for the most part. We got stronger each session, and also got to see a lot in terms of racing and relays. We have a much better sense of where we are and what we need to do to improve. I feel really good about the weekend."

Overall, 22 different Buckeyes posted at least one individual NCAA "B" time standards, while different 18 swimmers made at least one championship final.

Ohio State began the afternoon with three Top 10 finishes. Junior Kelly Ann Baird was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle finals with a time of 16:21.88. In the 200 backstroke, senior Emily Creran posted a time of 1:55.05 for sixth overall. In the 100 freestyle, sophomore Aliena Schmidtke cruised her way to a season-best time of 50.05 for seventh place, while seniorMichelle Williams was tenth with a time of 50.44.

Freshman Annie Lazor captured an NCAA "B" time of 2:13.16 in the 200 breaststroke for sixth overall. The time was a season-best for the Scarlet and Gray.

In the final individual event of the invite, senior Shannon Draves had a strong performance in the 200 butterfly, placing third with a time of 1:57.46.

The Scarlet and Gray concluded the meet with the 400 freestyle relay - one of the most exciting events in swimming. The relay team of Schmidtke, Williams, Megan DetroAnnie Jongekrijg posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:19.41.

In diving, junior Cheyenne Cousineau, who won the one-meter springboard title Saturday night, finished fourth in the platform finals with 259.85 points.

Ohio State returns to McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Jan. 11 in a co-ed dual meet s. Wright State.
