Columbus, Ohio - Michael Salazar and Noah Lense went two-three in the 100 butterfly on Friday night at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion to highlight day three of the USA Swimming Winter National Championships.

Salazar came out of the starting blocks in the first 50 yards of the event in 21.27 and he closed with a split of 24.71 to finish with a time of 45.98, a personal best for the junior from California to earn silver; it was the first time in his career that he has gone sub 46 seconds. Lense (46.17) came in third place exactly 19 hundredths of a second after Salazar for the bronze. Josh Prenot of California Aquatics edged the two Buckeyes for the title with a time of 45.81.


 

 

Meg Bailey had another solid performance in the 400 individual medley. The senior earned a podium finish with the third-fastest time of the evening with a readout of 4:07.07. She was joined by Kathrin Demler (4:11.17) and Molly Kowal (4:17.53) in the A final as well and they took fifth and eighth place, respectively.

Freshman Hanna Gresser had an impressive showing on Friday by earning a bid to the A final of the 100 breaststroke. She clocked an A final time of 1:01.38 to finish in eighth place. Aliena Schmidtke swam well in the A final of the 100 butterfly and placed fourth with a time of 51.30.

Ohio State had two swimmers win their B finals on Friday evening: freshman Kristen Romano took the top spot in her final with a personal-best time of 1:45.95 in the 200 freestyle and Mark Belanger clocked a 47.21 in the B final of the 100 backstroke to take his heat.

The final day of competition for the USA Swimming Winter National Championships will start Saturday morning at 9 a.m. ET at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and the finals will get going at 5 p.m. The Buckeyes will also finish out competition at the Total Performance Invitational on Saturday (9:30 a.m. prelims/5:30 p.m. finals).

At the Total Performance Invitational in Gambier, Ohio, the Buckeye men swept the top four spots of the 50 freestyle final with Kalvin Koethke (20.10) claiming gold, Michael Lynch (20.48) collecting silver, Teo Chavez (20.71) earning bronze and Justin Rich (20.72) placing fourth.

The women's sprinters took the top two spots in their 50 freestyle final with gold going to Cheyenne Meek (22.80) and silver being awarded to Devin Landstra (23.53). Marianne Kahmann (54.11/100 backstroke) and Evan McFadden (55.65/PR/100 breaststroke also claimed golds at the meet. Top finishers for the Buckeyes are below.
